I've never understood this. If I put in a day in turkey woods in Hancock, Harrison, or Pearl River county I'd almost expect to see one. But years of hunting st. tammany, Tangipahoa, and Washington parish and nothing
Snakes can be very regional. I grew up in St. Bernard. We had tons of Black-Masked Racers there, but if you crossed the Lake into Slidell you saw Black Racers exclusively. I caught snakes by the hundreds on the 40 argent canal, mostly Diamonback water snakes, and only saw 3 Cottonmouths in 15 years there. But if you went down the road into the Poydras area, I'd see that many in one snake hunting trip. Likewise, N.O. East had lots of Canebrake rattlers, but you'd never see one once you crossed back over the Intracoastal and into St. Bernard. Also, 9 out of 10 water snakes in the Chalmette area were Diamondbacks. Cross the river onto the West Bank and Broad-bandeds were everywhere.
My dad was a cop in the 7th district in the '70s, and he caught a lot of big Canebrakes in the East. There was a NOPD pistol range on Chef Hwy., and every time they cut the grass they 'd draw out the Canebrakes. My dad was the guy they'd call to catch them. He caught quite a few Hognoses in N.O. East too - another species we never had just minutes away in St. Bernard.

His wife too. She's always calling me asking me to beg him to stop
That photo was taken along the side of the parking lot of the old Six Flags(Jazzland) when they were filming th BP oil spill movie. He's not allowed to kill the wildlife by contract, only relocate them.
Got this Cottonmouth same location the other day.
How's this for a prospective shot?

and that was long before Katrina
The only person I know personally that was bitten by one was bitten by one on the old bohemia tract in the late 70s.

I'm sure Katrina shook things up a bit in distribution. I moved to the Northshore before Katrina. I've been thinking about making a journey back to da Parish to walk some of my old trails and see what the snake situation is like now.

Dumas hits all over NO east for rattlers. Apparently there's a good many surrounding the old jazzland.

Calm down man. I've seen way more burnt out vehicles than rattlers there....

around 2004-2005, pre camera phone days. my dad had some property off the road to angola. i was scouting for deer so it must have been sometime in september. i saw 4 other rattle snakes is less than 1/2 hour and quickly decided to gtfo.
i'm positive it was an eastern because i had seen a few of them when i was living in jacksonville, fla.

I've heard of others seeing what they thought were eastern diamondbacks in the northern Felicianas but none of them were ever confirmed. We saw them frequently when we hunted around Woodville and Crosby 20-25 years ago
