I am sure this has been discussed before and if so please point me to the thread it was in.

I'm in the market to purchase a rifle. What I am wondering is some opinions on if you were buying, would you buy:

.270
30-06
7mm-08
7mag

I know there are pros and cons to each and I am hearing them from friends here at home. I am used to shooting a 30-06 more because that's what I grew up shooting but I don't want to limit myself to that caliber just because that's what I have been more used to.

Any opinions are appreciated.

Tikka 270 would probably be the official rifle of the OB.

I would go 30-06/270 myself...

What are you planning to do with it, if your hunting, what size animal, what range, are you planning to hike with it? It would be good to know to direct you.

Ask yourself 3 questions:

1) are you a child? = 7mm-08
2) are you a woman? = .270
3) are you a man? = 30-06 or 7mag

For deer?

.270, .30-06, and .308 are probably the best options out there with 7mm-08 right behind.

All are available in almost every rifle out there, and all have ammo available everywhere you can buy ammo (except .308 with the tactical looney toon types freak out after a shooting).

I know you are probably joking but I will bite; 7mm-08 is an awesome caliber for kids up to adults. That is why I like it. You can game up to black bear wit hit ethically and it has less recoil than any of the other rounds mentioned.

The .270 is the optimal whitetail platform IMO. If elk/mule deer might be an option the 7mm mag would be a good choice but is almost too much gun for most whitetail.

Deer / greenfield or woods. No hiking other than walking to a stand or shooting house.

Not sure what is feminine about it since it is just a necked down .30-06

With 130 gr ballistic tips i have less than two inch difference in point of aim from 0-200 yds and less than 7" drop at 300yds.

270, 7-08 and .308 are ideal whitetail rounds.

7Mag and 30-06 are overkill on whitetail, but you still end up with dead deer.

I notice that 7Mag guys miss the most deer and .243 guys wound the most.

7mm 08 would be a great compliment to a 30 06. Light recoil but deadly, my son knocked over a 220 lb buck last week.....it didn't even move. He has killed many others as well with shots over 200 yards.

30-06 and .270 are the standard Donald hunting calibers. 30-06's kick is more of like someone punching you in the shoulder, where .270 is like getting hit with a heavy whiffle ball bat. Thud vs sharp kick.

Other than that, they're pretty much the same IMHO

I would buy .308 in case you ever have the inkling to buy an AR-10 or Springfield M1A, you'd have that caliber. It's also cheap to buy in bulk if you want to get into shooting as a hobby or just practice often. Plus milder recoil than the other calibers and that is prlly the 3rd most available hunting caliber in your typical hunting section at any store.

I prefer my aught six due to the huge variety of round sizes available. You can go from buffalo to prairie dog with the same rifle.
