Gonna stir the pot some?? OTOH, your statements don't apply if the deer were shot w/ a Tikka 7 Mag or Tikka 243.

Good question, RTMJ. Personally, I don't think a 7 Mag is needed for the majority of the deer hunting done in the south. When I was growing up in the Pacific NW, the first rifle I bought was a Winchester M70 in 270 Winchester. Killed a bunch of deer w/ and was always satisfied w/ it. But, for a number of years now I've done all my deer hunting w/ various single shot handguns. A Savage Striker in 308 Win is my current #2 in kills. But, my 2 most recent kills have been w/ a Remington XP-100 in 7-08. When my son started deer hunting, I bought him a 308 Win. I say this to point out there's not a whole lot of difference in effectiveness between the non-magnum calibers you mentioned. Nevertheless, if it were me and I already had a 30-06, I'd prolly lean towards the 7-08 just to have a lighter rifle w/ a short action action that shoots a little bit lighter bullet.

308= yes
270= yes
30 06= yes
7 mag= no, only because I don't see a point. I would get a 300 win mag if you want something with more power. I would skip 7 mag.

For what it is worth 30 06 will kill any thing in the lower 48 and has more grizzly kills (I would get a bigger caliber though) then any other caliber documented.

Anyone shoot a box of .308 or 30-06 at the range? I'm getting a .308 delivered in a few days and planning to spend a lot of bench time.

.308 is generally easier on the shoulder than the .30-06

Depending on the rifle and load, a box of bullets usually isn't bad out of a .308. Shooting a box of 175gr match loads out of a tikka super light will probably get rough towards the end, but a box of 150gr mild loads out of a wood stocked 700 won't be bad at all.

I love my 270 wsm...but out of the OP, id go 270 if I were hunting greenfield and could shoot more than 200 yards. Just a tad flatter than the rest. If my longest shot was less than that, its be 30-06 no doubt.

But my next gun will be a 7mm-08....well, just because I want a good compact rifle.

270wsm ammo is a bitch to find these days. Still don't know why hornady doesn't load this round.

Boom Count! Been shooting a Model 700 Carbine 6mm for 20 years, never had a deer/pig take a freaking step after squeezing off.

Had 3 pigs piled up at 240 yds last weekend. Buddy missed at 50 with his big ol manly 300 Ultra Mag. Shot placement is key

Just bought a Ruger M77 MarkII 6mm yesterday and the gentleman who turned me on to this caliber and has at least 10 of these in different makes, is already making cash/trade offers. Great Caliber, and somewhat unique!!

I'm the opposite. If I'm shooting far, I want the aught six so I can throw heavier bullets.

Thanks for all the opinions. What I am going with is a Ruger American in 30-06 with a Vortex Crossfire 3-9x50 scope. Going to pick it up tonight.

Good choice. Not sure why they would make anything bigger than 06.

Same here, but several years ago. The 6mm Remington is a well kept secret. No exit wound, fragments inside the deer like a grenade! Deer no move.

You were just saying the .270 was "feminine", and now you're buying pads.

Lots of people don't.

Bullets completely letting go inside of something typically gives extremely fast kills.

I personally like the consistency of a full pass through. I prefer exit holes and good blood and the occasional bang flop rather than lots of bang flops with the occasional deer running off with no blood trail.

I'm pretty convinced that for whitetail caliber is almost irrelevant for shots inside of 300 yards.
A double lung, shoulder, or neck shot deer will die within 100 yards on the vast majority of quality shots.

So pick whatever caliber u like, and put it where it needs to be.

That being said I shoot a 25-06 for deer and a 300 win mag for big game . I like em both, but much prefer shooting the 25-06.
