So I’ve never experienced these little bastards for a few reasons. Mainly that I’ve never lived near pond/lake water for any real period of time and I’m working during the late morning hours when they feast.

Well, thanks for COVID-19 I’ve finally had a chance to sit on my porch (now near a pond) and read late one morning. I had a shirt and sweatshirt on + was sitting in a mesh back chair AND put mosquito spray on to be safe. I feel a few minor back itches the hour or so I was there but it wasn’t until another hour after that when I back was driving me crazy that my wife looked and took a picture...

15 inflamed and incredibly itchy whelps were now on my back. Those mother-Frickers got through a chair + 2 layers of clothing to feast on my delicious back muscle.

I have now decided to eradicate their species wherever I find them.

Does anyone have anything that works as a repellant for my use during this crusade?

One more time...

frick these things:

Down the bayou a brulo is a regular gnat ( teeth with wings).
These seem bigger. Don’t know if I’ve ever seen one.
Been around a gazillion gnats.

The only thing I have found that works is the olive spray sheen sold at dollar general or family dollar. It is in the hair product section at your store. In a green aerosol spray can. It’s the only product we use at our job site

When I was 13 (1974) Dad took me to Grand Isle and we camped in a tent on the beach. The first and second day the wind blew and we didn't have any problems. The third day the wind died down and that night the top of the ten was covered (inside) with some kind of knat that had blood on their mind. SOB's were vicious to say the least.

I’ll give it a try!

Do you use it as a repellant on yourself or do you spray randomly around wherever you are?

I actually read Vanilla of all things is a strong repellant (?) I have no idea if it’s true.

Yep, loggers use those vanilla Christmas tree air fresheners. They are so bad at our camp I stick one in my pocket and hang one from my hat.

Bug Soother (smell like lemon Pledge) or Victoria Secret Amber Romance (smell like a $5 whore). Never use Off or Repel as they are attracted to it.

It's in the "ethnic" hair section and it's like magic! It smells pretty good too.

Vanilla extract works almost as well.

I just spray it on that isn’t covered by gloves or head mask. I’m actually turkey hunting this morning and just sprayed down. Good luck guys

Vanilla does work. I used this last year and it worked great.
!/3 cup imitation vanilla
!/3 cup regular listerine mouthwash, the original stuff.
!/3 cup water. Mix it all together in a spray bottle had use liberally.
I'm going to mix some up today.

Ya they are blackflys, DEET will stop them from biting but they will land on you. A head net works best - good news for LA is the fly stage doesn't like heat so they wont last - you want to see them as a real PITA go to AK, or northern Canada

Lol, nah I'm good for now. My back is finally starting to Not itch.

But for real, how the HELL did they get through 3 layers to bite my back. One of which was a fricking mesh chair-back?

Bug Soother

You are all welcome. They have a few others similar on the market but this is all we use and it works wonders keep the gnats at bay.

Who knew? was sipping on a lil jelly jar of straight whiskey yesterday evening the wife was outside. I walked out sat by the fire pit and put my lil jar on an over turned bucket we use as an end table tween the chairs by the pit. I kinda forgot about it for a few minute talking with the wife watching the birds and enjoying our courtyard. The humming birds were flitting about feeding on the pomegranate blooms. I grabbed my jar for a sip and as I raised it i could see something in it. Bout 100 gnats floating on the whisky and several more on the inside of the glass they made a almost solid covering of the whisky. I hadn't really noticed them but unless they really b ad I don't one things for sure they sure love straight whisky pour ya self a tiny bit in the bottom of a glass and check this out it really surprised me.
