My son killed a black squirrel this weekend.

I have squirrel hunted for 30 years and never killed one.

I’ve seen one or two in my life cross the road in the government woods.

Any of you guys ever see them?

I’ve killed about 20 in my life. Some areas have more than others. All the ones I have killed were fox squirrels. However about 5 years ago while deer hunting I had a black cat squirrel come about 5 feet from me. I am 100% certain it was a cat squirrel

Yeah seen a good bit and killed prolly 10 or so.
Seems like certain areas have them you will see several and then other areas will not have one.
I saw one last year at my brothers lease that was a booner squirrel, I will bring my 22 this winter and try to get it so I can mount it.

I squirrel hunted my whole life in swla and can’t remember ever seeing one. Then I started deer hunting in cat island and just about every squirrel I saw was black. Shoulda brought a .22 just to say I killed one. Maybe have it mounted.

Along Atchafalaya River on Attakapas Management Area there have been times I have killed more black than red fox squirrels. They are some big ones and really like being in cypress trees.

Is that the one that’s close to Lake Washington?

I killed one 30 years ago in the Picayune area. Totally black with just a touch of white on his nose. He was a good size squirrel. I had him mounted.

Seen three in my life. First one was in the mid 90’s while deer hunting at Stumpy’s off Hwy 76. Second one was near St. John high school in Plaquemine. The last one I saw was behind CJ Brown bldg off Sherwood Forest. Never ran across one while squirrel hunting, and I’ve been chasing them for a long time.

Have killed lots of them. I didn't realize they were such a rarity in places..

Black fox squirrels are rare. Black eastern gray (cat) squirrels are even rarer.

I’ve shot black fox squirrels but not yet a black gray squirrel.

I've killed a few in Sherburne and RKY.

They stick out like a sore thumb.

Two types of black squirrel

Agouti coloration - each hair has two colors make it appear dark

Melanistic - jet black

Fox and grays can have either but most of what I see is the agouti fox squirrels

That is Yazoo Wildlife.

All the time. You have to be where the fox squirrels/red squirrels live.

As for the guy that said he saw a black cat squirrel.

Pretty sure black squirrels can only be fox squirrels like how jaguars can be black. I don’t think cat squirrels can be black just how mountain lions can’t be black. (They don’t have the gene that can possibly turn them black) I have seen hybrids and one of those could have been black I guess.

Killed some in Chatham, LA back in the 1990s when we were in a hunting club there.

Have some in west GA that have black heads on them but but regular fox squirrel colored bodies.
