If Saban says it on the air - Kiffin should take the LSU job - it's all ok but if Saban says it to Kiffin privately it's a conflict.

I don't understand how Kiffin at LSU conflicts with Saban being paid by ESPN to comment on college football.

You do understand that you have total control over this. Unfollow him on X and if you see a random tweet from him pop up, RESIST THE URGE to click on it and read it.

This kept Les Miles at the helm for a long time before he had to rely on his own abilities.

it's not a zero sum game. a billionaire paid the buyout, drop in the bucket for him. there's no indication it will have an effect on the ability to pay another coach or provide NIL funds for players

Concern is that the next coach will expect higher pay and at least same guaranteed term. In today's annual mercenary hiring of players from the portal, it's increasingly difficult to build culture that coincides with a long-term guaranteed contract. I'd much rather see an incentive laden contract to keep the coach hungry to perform and produce.

But why would a top-tier coach accept that? The landscape is set and it's going to be difficult to change to match the aspect of today's game.

I think the timing is off and I don’t think it’s a fit for LSU or Lane Kiffin. Lane has to coach in the playoffs and LSU is not going to wait for him. It’s just one of those things where the timing isn’t right.

I think you're right on target, BUT, many will wonder "what if" for years after this union never happens.

The contract should also then include a clawback of $500k for 4 losses.

Carrot and the stick are most effective when used together.

Billy Napier.

This might actually be an upgrade.

He's likely using the debt as a tax avoidance mechanism

You're he's paying interest on the loan with after tax earnings to increase his Schedule A deductions?

If he pays $5,000/year in mortgage interest, assuming he pays an effective tax rate of 30% he would save $1,500 in federal income taxes.

So, he's borrowing money to save $1,500? Sure, I'd do that, but I don't make $10m a year either.

It's more likely that he has the $1m+ in investments that could have been used to purchase the house outright, however, those investments in this market are earning 10%+ annually, or $100k+. If the mortgage is at 6% from TAF, then he is still earning (in very simplistic example) 4% on borrowing and leaving his funds invested.

Now as interest rates drop, if the mortgage is fixed, the spread will shrink and at some point, he can liquidate the investment and pay the mortgage off. Borrowing lets him uses OPM to still earn 4% in this example and gives him flexibility to exit when the situation changes negatively.

I don't believe it's about a tax strategy, but more of an investment strategy.

Funds to pay off my house are invested conservatively and have earned over 15% YTD while my mortgage sits at 2%. No way I'm taking $ out of this market to pay off a 2% borrowing.

BK's head coach role is more than likely guaranteed

I wonder does it stipulate WHO the HC reports to or the HC roles and responsibilities? Bring in someone as the Football GM. Have Kelly report to him and have the GM micromanage Kelly's every hire and scheme.

The coaching will get better with the right GM or Kelly will be willing to negotiate a lesser buy out to get out of that situation.
quote:

I expect both parties to agree to a reduced buyout

What is Kelly's incentive to do reduce his buy out? It's guaranteed money for just phoning it in.

The only bargaining chip I see that LSU has is to pay a lower amount up front rather than the full amount over time. Unless the school can find a "for cause" reason, I see this as their only negotiation point. Am I missing something else?

short yardage red zone offense is the #1 worst of all

Based on the lack of success LSU has seen there, we are renaming it the "dead zone".

sounds like someone who isn’t totally invested.

This is why you don't give 10 year guaranteed contracts. Obviously, the market dictates that you do, but something has to give besides the boosters to buy out!

Kelly has no incentive to stay at the top of his abilities. I didn't like the way he kept saying "they", "they", "they" in the press conference as if he wasn't a part of this team or the efforts put forth.

BK has been absolutely terrible in his hiring decisions

Anyone else beginning to wonder that when the boosters told Woody to "hire Kelly" they meant Chip and Woody misunderstood?

Maybe Napier can hire him as his OC at the P5 school he will be at next fall. He certainly is not the best that LSU should be able to attract for the position.

Trust the math.

At 130 yards (This is almost 60 yards longer than Lacy's attorney admits the evidence shows he entered his proper lane of travel and 60 yards BEFORE the accident occurred) and traveling 70 MPH the time the gold truck had before a head on collision was 1.3 seconds. This is being generous to Lacy and assuming the truck was traveling 30 MPH.

At 80 yards, that's less than a second. Explain to me how Lacy is not responsible for the responses of those he was less than 1.5 seconds away from being in a head on collision with while he was passing 4 vehicles on a 2 lane road in a no passing zone.

This is the catalyst of this tragic situation. Lacy's recklessness created a dangerous situation that caused a few split-second decisions in what looked to the drivers to be an upcoming head-on collision.

Lacy swerved back into his lane a second before the collision, the truck driver swerved to the right, and the Kia lady swerved to the left because of a driver approaching them head-on at a high rate of speed in their lane.

In a panic situation, not all decisions survive the scrutiny post incident. Some decisions (swerving left) make no sense but I'm sure it was a reaction and not a thoughtful process in the second available to make the decision.

It sucks for all involved, but we have to admit that Lacy (illegally) initiated the chain of events that led to an immediate death.

BK is a program builder

He is really good at putting together a strong program. Every place he has been has been successful while he is there and after he has left

Getting closer to the time to test the "after he has left" theory here.

So what happens to LSU RBs between Freshman and Sophomore years?
If using Venmo or such, make sure the phone number on the Venmo is the same as you've been texting them on. Send payment with any guarantee the payment platform offers, even if it costs an extra 3%. Don't do the F/F purchase!

Or, buy on SeatGeek.
