Saw this and figured I had to share here. It's a LONG read but has a little bit of everything. Snagging bed fish, lying about many record catches, cheating in tournaments, loosening lug nuts, and even threatening a 13 yo kid. This guy was a real piece of work. I wonder if Bassmaster will print any redactions of all the articles they ran praising him over the years.

quote:

Mike Long was, and to some of you, is, widely considered not only the best big bass fisherman in the world, but one of its best anglers. Mike Long on the cover of Bassmaster Magazine in December of 2009 The December 2009 issue of Bassmaster Magazine featuring Mike Long on the cover with two large bass from Lake Jennings. He has been featured on the cover of over 40 fishing magazines, he’s fished alongside Hank Parker and Shaw Grigsby on their popular TV shows and racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in tournament winnings and big bass prizes along the way.

quote:

Mike Long, big bass legend, is a fraud — he doesn’t even exist. He’s a fictional character that the real Michael Christopher Long, a lying, cheating, manipulative con-artist created to dupe us. And it worked, for a while anyway.

Never heard of the guy, but was an interesting read. Feel pretty confident in saying that guy is a douche bag.

I remember following his saga trying to break the WR. Dottie was a big deal in the bass fishing world for a while and she eventually died of naturally causes and was recovered weighing over 22lbs I think.

And yes, Mike Long sounds like a grade-A d-bag. Crazy all of the stuff he pulled over the years. The funniest aspect of it all to me is that fact that apparently he isn't/wasn't even a very good fisherman.

And how bold do you have to be to use pictures of the same fish to claim records over the course of different years?

The "snow bass" video is painfully obvious it was staged.
Also, show me a pro or weekend warrior who, on multiple occasions, can catch +7lb bass and not make a sound until its in the boat.

Never heard of him. I don't follow pro bass fisherman. I wish bass tournaments were illegal. Maybe then we wouldn't have to sit in line to launch a boat due to allt he tournament fisherman and pro wanna-bes WORKING!

Fishing is suppose to be relaxing get-a-way from stress.

Damn... that's some intense commitment to outing a cheater...

What a douche... The lug nuts thing is fricking *nuts*... Once would be ok... sure it could happen. But just about every person he had a run in with... Holy frick.

Yeah that was a crazy read. Insane the lengths he went to. Threatening to beat a 13 year old kids arse was icing on the cake.

Reminds me a a deer hunter here who bags big deer all the time. He brags and posts photos with shite eating grins and has all of the younger hunters hanging on his every word. Thing is he poaches big time, hunts at night, and will sneak onto your property or lease to get one of yours if you happen to mention a nice one you saw.

Sneaky rotten bastard.

Read the whole thing.

It's incredible he got away with it so long. Polygraphs at bass tournaments have been standard since the 90's, but it sounds like he was defrauding smaller clubs without the resources.

Lol that was awesome.

But I’m glad I didn’t write that article. This Long character is a psycho.

Back where I grew up Bass fishing has gotten incredibly competitive. Lots of friendships ruined. People sending guys out to prefish while lakes are closed to them. I was surprised to hear how much money the winners are bringing in.

Notice how his partners continued to fish tournaments with him and keep the winnings. The one guy even stayed at his house after he threatened his 13 yr old son.

I was confused about that too but the editor addressed it in the comments, those two things happened in opposite order of how it was written. They stayed with him and then a year later saw the fish in his livewell at his new house.

Wow I read the entire article. It’s crazy that he staked out and videoed another team snagging and ratted then out. That goes back to the old saying it takes a thief to catch a thief. He’d probably make a great game warden.

And he got really excited when he did catch a fish. I remember him catching a pound-and-a-half bass and screaming “get the net, get the net, its a big one,” Norling recalled. “No one gets excited like that for fish that small.”

I like how all of these guys that fish with him were perfectly ok with winning prize money with him and taking his hush money though. All real stand up guys.

Damn. What kind of person do you need to be to blatantly cheat that much for that long and still be able to look at yourself in the mirror? Is it that you get so engrossed in the scheme that you can't pull away? His story early on seems to have grown so fast that I get the feeling he didn't know how to stop it once it snowballed.
