The amount of people who cant admit that their pet .243 sucks for shooting deer is astounding.
Many a deer have been taken with a 243. It doesnt suck compared to any other caliber at up to 300 yds. You place the bullet in the vitals and it's a dead deer. The vitals are around 8.5 to 11in. That's plenty room for error.

This is the key. There is no "best" caliber. If you put the biscuit in the basket, it's dead. Dead is dead, it can't get deader.

Watched a guy take a bear with a blow gun this morning.

Its based on shooting and tracking lots of deer with lots of different stuff. There is a consistent common denomonator in putting the dog on deer that are shot well, .243 almost every time. I wish i had charted it.

I would bet any amount of money my 110gr Barnes penetrates deeper than an Accubond.
I doubt that, but it's an interesting idea. I don't have the time nor interest to check it out myself. Shooting the 2 bullets into a 3 foot stack of water soaked newspaper will tell one for sure. Have you seen ballistic testing on the 'net to support your statement? I've never been real high on the Barnes' bullets since their early days because they weren't very accurate in my gun. Having said that, I'm shooting the 120 gr TTSX in my 7-08 and 284 Win handguns this year.

There is a video on YouTube where they tested both. 168gr Accubond vs Barnes 168gr.I shot plenty deer with Barnes. They will go from front to back. Penetration was never a problem with those bullets. I recovered a few bullets in the skin of the deer.

Does this possibly have to deal with being a lot of kids placing less than ideal shots?
7-08 is a considerably less known caliber. Lot of people probably never heard about it. .243 is one of the more well known. Lot more shots taken with a .243 is my point, lot more with inexperienced hunters too.

Im not counting bad shots. Every one i remember actually finding was shot plenty good enough.

We ended up buying her a savage .223 youth model. Killed her first deer with it this evening. A 7 point. Shot it at about 60 yards, hit it perfect. Deer did run about 40 yards and didn't bleed much just like y'all said but we hunt a big opening so easy to find. Thanks again.

ballistic tip
My only contribution into this thread...i hope ballistic tips die a slow painful death. Like many of the prey they are used on.
My disdain can not be understated
