My daughter wants to kill a deer this year. She is 9 and petite. I was thinking .223. Any suggestions for best rifle/caliber combo greatly appreciated

Thanks. Never shot that before. I'll have to check it out.

300 Blackout is what my 6yr old shoots. He killed a deer with it at age 5 last year.

Have a gunsmith put a brake on whatever you get.

When I was a kid I shot a 30-06 with a muzzle break on it once and it about blew out my ear drums. Do you have to wear ear protection with muzzle breaks, or do they make them differently now so that all of the sound isn't directed back towards the shooter?

Might as well get a 6.5 Creedmore.

Ammo is inexpensive, choices in rifles are plentiful and the caliber is going to stick.

I know this may be an unpopular statement, but I feel that the 7mm-08 is going to suffer long term with the 6.5 CM around.

too expensive for a kid, but look into a nice semi, so you can absorb some recoil

Depends on the brake. Most are vented to the side. It will be a little louder for the shooter, but not much.

It will be much louder for you though sitting to the side of her. Sit directly behind her and youd be fine as well.

You should be wearing hearing protection anyway which negates the volume increase.

Yup, Im really wanting a 7-08 right now. The ability to run light bullets for smaller people and then a 162 eld for bigger animals is pretty enticing. The 7-08 has a pretty awesome barrel life as well.

My 9yo shoots a .270 and has never even mentioned it kicks. Simply because we never discuss recoil. just makes the shot. She is tiny 55lbs.

As long as you stay under 150 yards 223 with quality bonded ammo will have little or zero recoil An will do a great job!!
7mm08 will be slightly more recoil but still manageable by a youth An will serve as a forever fun for them if they want to

7mm-08, get low recoil ammo if youre worried. Dont get a .223 or .243

Make sure the gun fits. Kids can handle just as much recoil as adults (within reason) as long as the gun fits. Make sure the stock is short enough

I grabbed a Ruger American 6.5 Creedmoor and put a muzzle break on it for little man. Looking forward to shooting it this weekend. Great looking gun. I like the 7-08 as well.

I third Delta Doc's rec of 7.08 with low recoil shells. It's what mine started on

The beauty is she’ll be able to grow with the gun. Once she’s 10-12, shoot a full load and kill deer at 300 yards.

Never understood the disdain for the 243??!! Not saying it’s the ultimate caliber but it’s great round depending on the situation, if OP is under 200yards it provides the low recoil he is looking for.
