Well, it is and is isn't. A single hit with a .17 rimfire is superior to any number of misses with .45 ACP for example.

Overcoming intermediate obstacles on the way to the target isn't a myth.

Now, using a cartridge of modern design is there a hell of a lot of difference between a 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, or .357 Mag striking the same target at the same angle from the same distance? Not really.

But are those choices going to give you a better chance of winning the gunfight than a pistol chambered in .22 LR, .32, .380? Absolutely.

This.

AR15 is the best home defense weapon for men or women.

If you're running it suppressed I would agree. If not the flash and blast inside the home would be brutal. That being said I keep my Suppressed MPX next to my bed with 158gr subsonic JHP.

For the OP a good fullsize 9mm with 124Gr HST +p ammo is going to be hard to beat.

My go to defense guns
Truck- FN 5.7
Bedside- Mossy 930 tactical, Sig MPX and Sig P226 Legion
If I have to go outside- Scar 17 or AR 556 SBR both suppressed.

Do they make a little semi-auto .410 like that?

Just bought 2 of the 8 shot Redhawk .357s. They only have a 3" barrel, but the 1 that I picked to shoot, does pretty well at 15 yards. I wish they had a 4" barrel though.
Trigger pull is also a bit heavy.

If by "riot shotgun" you mean one with a longer magazine tube I agree.

If by "riot shotgun" you mean one with no stock, I strongly disagree.

I have a vepr 12 full of small buck on a magnet under the side of our bed. Has a simple red dot and a light on it.

If someone wants to come in, they will get a lesson in overwhelming force.

9mm AR or the like. Wife keeps a 19 in her nightstand, I prefer an MP5.

Full sized 9mm with nice hollowpoint ammo. I know it's expensive, but shoot some of those rounds at the shooting range before you just throw them in the gun.

Make sure you also have a flashlight on or next to your pistol. A must for home defense

Can anyone recommend a good rail-mounted light for a pistol? Or at least specs for one? TIA

i recommend just yelling "HEY GUY I'M OVER HERE"... must cheaper method of giving up your tactical advantage inside your home.

A big enough gun to where you will never be able to clean all the blood, guts and brains off your bedroom wall and hallway. Think RPG as a weapon for home defense.

One of my favorite myths.

Maybe they should start putting switches on weapon lights...

Massad Ayoob view on weaponlights

quote:

I teach my students the light on the gun is analogous to the scope on a hunting rifle. Countless lives have been saved when the hunter who thought he saw a deer put the scope to his eye and his magnification showed him in time the “target” was actually a human. By the same token, many tragedies have undoubtedly been prevented when the light beam on the cop’s drawn gun showed him the suspect had pulled out an iPhone, not a pistol.

quote:

The pistol-mounted light gives us a tactical advantage, but it supplements, rather than replaces, the separate handheld illumination that has served so well for so long as an adjunct to the defensive handgun.
