re: Best pistol for home protection?

A lightweight high velocity projectile is less likely to penetrate numerous walls compared to almost any level of buckshot. An AR15 is one of the best close range indoor weapons. But if the OP is not able to put in the time training with one then a handgun would do fine for both. A 12 gauge with buckshot kicks like a damn mile and if his wife is a novice I would not advise it.

Another point I think dawg brought up a while back is that us hunters take for granted that we can operate a pump shotgun in our sleep. It isn't like that for someone who didn't grow up shooting one, i.e. the wife. For somebody completely new it'd take as much or more range time than a semi auto rifle to learn how to operate a pump.
100% chance of short shuck for somebody under pressure who doesn't shoot them often.
For a handgun, I'll always recommend a full size .357 magnum revolver. Anybody can figure out how to make that thing spit 6 out under just about any circumstances.

Don't really need buckshot indoors and the kick would be less. Even bird-shot isn't going to open up across a room. I'd probably go with a low brass #4 in the widest choke you have available. And even this is going to be detrimental to your son/daughter in the next room; however I'm guessing less than a hand gun. Gauge to be determined after seeing how she does. I keep #1 buckshot for such use, with a couple extra handguns even closer.
someone will let us know if I'm wrong

I have an m&p9mm in my nightstand, but I was under the impression that 45acp is a better round for home protection, as it's a subsonic bullet that a. Won't penetrate through as many walls in the event of an errant shot and b. Won't damage your eardrums

Make sure you also have a flashlight on or next to your pistol. A must for home defense

Unsupressed both will damage your eardrums prettt damn well so that's a moot point. You cannot tell the sound difference unsuprressed. Wall penetration between handguns rounds is much a moot point, they both go through a whole lot of walls so dong miss

A youth model 410 gets the job done and is probably easier for your wife to handle.

I don't agree with birdshot at all.

Your eardrums will still get damaged but you won't know about it until after the fight is over.
Read up on auditory exclusion.

I read an FBI report 2 years ago that said a .357 has the highest percent of single round stopping power of all the handguns they tested.
So, in addition to the .40 in my nightstand, I have a .357 in a pop-open gun safe attached to my bed

The problem with .357 mag is you only get 6/7/8 of them at the most. The 9mm I keep around holds 18 and is a 1 second reload away from 17 more.
It's all in what you feel comfortable with. I shoot revolvers way better than self-shuckers, so I lead more towards them. I've just had far more trigger time with them.

Yeah all that stopping power shite is irrelevant in my opinion, and I could be wrong. To me, any mf'er that keeps on coming after: 1/ Seeing a gun drawn and 2/ Hearing a shot, is a one in a million.

It does have the best batting average when it comes to one shot stops for handgun calibers. It's about as much horsepower as you can get in a controllable reasonably sized handgun.

I've been warming up to the idea of AR-15 as "all around" defensive gun. Not only is it a great hobby weapon, you can standardize ammo, magazines, accessories along an entire range of weapons from SMG-sized pistols up to relatively long range precision weapons. And there are few compromises to be made, relative to pistols.
After all - a pistol is an inherent compromise - a "good enough" gun to allow you to fight your way to a real gun, i.e. a rifle or a shotgun (or machinegun
