Who is the best dog trainer in Louisiana? Looking for a trainer for my 9 week old Dogo Argentino. She is still young but when she gets alittle bit older I would like to have her get training on basic obedience.

Looking for any tips or suggestions. TIA

Hugely open ended question Roy.
OB really isn’t that technical or difficult imo, I had a two month program that included collar conditioning.
I will say that if you don’t get some training along with your dog there’s going to be a gap eventually. Just looked the breed up, where are you located and I will be able to point you in a direction?

I live near Shreveport/Bossier.

I agree, I will need training as well as the puppy. This dog will not be hunting, just want basic obedience training.

Basically want my puppy to walk on a leash without pulling, heel, come when called, bark on command and stop on command. Anything else would be nice, but not required.

Know a guy in Longview but need to find his #.
Advice, you don’t want a dog to bark because it can’t be turned off.
Also, barking takes as much energy as running, it’s no bueno.
Never understood the police dogs being allowed to bark, it’s a bad habit.
Lemme get back to you with #, I’m in LC and if I still had kennels I would take him just to say I trained one.

24 yrs, OB and gun dog as a side hustle. No money in training full time and not much PT IF you do it right.

Tell him you got his info from the guy who trained Ranger in LC. He will remember, you need to visit and participate.

“The Dogo Argentino is a large, powerful, and athletic breed developed in Argentina for big-game hunting. Known for its all-white coat, immense strength, and deep loyalty, this intelligent working dog requires a firm, experienced owner and intensive socialization to thrive.

Descendant from a fighting breed.”

Sounds like you have some work ahead of you, besides increase your homeowners coverage. What do you hunt with these things, deer? Pigs? Bears?

There was one in my neighborhood for a little while. Big huge dumbass of a dog. I hated that fricking thing and I'm glad its gone. We're lucky it didnt kill someone's kid.

To OP - make sure the discipline is on point with that thing. Based on my anecdotal experience, quantity of 1, its worse than a pit bull.

I’ve only ever seen 1. It was highly trained by its extremely wealthy owner. It seemed to be a good over all dog. It and my Catahoula got along good. It was definitely intimidating looking. Not a dog for your average dog owner.

We had some neighbors down the street that had 2. They would get out time to time and tried to attack my 2 beagles when I was walking them twice. I went and got a pistol and was gonna shoot them as they were in my garage at the time but they left after I yelled at them.

I don’t think they’re the kind of dog a “casual” dog owner should keep.

Kuddos to the OP for wanting to get yours trained and not let it be a menace.

Thanks, I have had one before and loved it. Don't get me wrong, I know any dog can be vicious, but I believe that most dogs are created by their environment.

I have a 2 year old male catahoula and they get along great.

You are right in thinking that environment plays a role in how a dog develops. I trained retrievers for a while and my wife has show poodles now. By far the one thing that affects dog behavior is breeding. There is exceptions but we breed certain characteristics into dogs and try to get expected outcomes. Beagles and hounds trail game retrievers retrieve and dogs breed to herd will normally herd. Dogs that are bred to guard or fight normally do that. The problem with these dogs is that the amount of destruction that they possess is extreme. Many small dogs bite but an attack by these dogs can easily end horrifically. The statement that my dog has never bitten someone is not an argument to the safety that the dog has. A dog like this only gets to mess up and do what it’s bred to do. After once the dog is normally put down. It’s a loaded gun and your responsibility to control. Wish only good things for you and yours

A side note on dogs that are trained. I know of more than a handful of highly trained retrievers that were trained to be steady to shot and not “break “ leave without being commanded and have been shot on accident trying to do what they are bred to do which is retrieve. Always have control of your dog. It is after all just an animal
