My youngest 2 (9/8) share a Honda Trx 90. It was 2400 at Brookhaven Honda 2 Christmas’s ago. They ride it all the time and no issues.

Have had a Yamaha 90 and Honda 90 for the kids. They are grown now and we still all ride them. I think the Yamaha 90 is actually an Eton.

Buy a rebuilt atc 70.

Seriously.

It will teach him body English. Will run forever. And when he inevitably wrecks it, it was 120lbs less than the 4wheeler.

My oldest rolls the crap out of 88 moto 4 80cc I got for free and rebuilt/tuned up. Thing I like about it is it’s shaft drive, dang near all the new ones are chain. He has followed me across a few deer leases and you couldn’t slap the smile off him spinning through some mud puddles.

I’d steer clear of the corner hardware shop Chinese mini bikes. Try to find parts for them when they break, in a year.

Honda 90 would be my go to had I not got that moto 4. Some great little reliable bikes, change the oil regularly and they last. Yamaha makes a grizzly 125 that’s pretty legit as well. Have a friend that got his son a Polaris 90 not to fond of it but not a bad bike I guess.

Agree with all who suggest Honda 90. The one we have is probably 15 years old now. It’s survived 2 kids and cranks easy. My 9 year old girl doesn’t need to go 40 mph though so it does have a governor on it.

I love the pre 2014 Honda 90s. After that they have a few emissions hiccups.

Pay your dealer to remove the airbox and muffler restriction and tune it.

They run like the old ones if you do that. Pretty much all new carbed bikes have this issue.

With the new yamaha, you literally flip a small resistor over to fix the timing issuethey ship from the factory with to meet emissions.

Honda 90 is mechanically superior to all.

To be clear, the Chinese motors (loncin, Lifan, piranha, and gpx) are all incredibly well built. It's everything attached to them that's a huge POS

I had a 1985 model growing up and to this day it is the most reliable machine I have ever owned.

I bought my son a honda 50 dirt bike when he was six. He rode the hell out of it and never got hurt, even the few times it slid out from under him in the clovers. Much safer than a 4 wheeler. Now he's 9 and I got him a 250 Recon. He still rides the little 50 sometimes. Hell. My big arse even rides it. I'd start with a little dirt bike.
