So if the Bluefin was dead, why did they release it, rather than keep it?

It says it in the Instagram post. The trophy quota has already been met therefore it would have been illegal to keep it regardless if It was dead or not

Quota had already been filled. The feds would rather you waste 300lbs of prime tuna meat.

They were swordfishing. They weren’t targeting bluefin.

Do you people read?

They thought they were hooked up to a sword since they were swordfishing and it was hanging out at 900’. Turns out it was a bluefin, they had to release dead or alive.

So if it was a swordfish they could have kept it?

This is quite possibly the dumbest law I've ever heard of in the outdoors!

They have 900 lbs of tuna, which is dead, and they have to "release" it.

Yet that same organization will fine other hunters for throwing away dead ducks and charge you for wanton waste and over limit (or whatever else)

It was a documented recreational fish.

How else do you prevent people from routinely 'accidentally' catching them?

I'm not sure what depth this fish was hooked. But in my very limited swordfishing experience you drop bait at different depths. So the first may be 250 ft, second 500 ft, 3rd 750 ft, etc.

Fish are caught all the time targeting other species, I agree it seems goofy. But outside of contacting authorities and having them take the fish I'm not sure how else you curb people 'accidentally' catching them.

What I don't understand is why were these 4 guys able to use someone else's 'brand new' boat to go serious swordfishing overnight. I understand taking a new rig out for a sea trial before delivery. Take it out to a rig or a reef and catch some AJ, sure. I would be a bit pissed if my new boat arrived with 30-40 hours on it. 'Prep'd for delivery' must mean new outboards and a discount.

I'm guessing it was used for shows and what not and the new owner knew it would come with some hours. Usually those show boats have all the latest and greatest, at a discounted rate. Kinda like the floor model TV is bought at a discount.

It was caught at 900'

Even if you have yo call the authorities...wasting it should not be an option when you've done nothing wrong.

So as long as I call the authorities and promise them I didn’t mean to do it, I can keep any bluefin I catch?

What could go wrong.
