Came to say this. I would rather there be a law in place that requires that fish to be turned over to the authorities than have a dead fish wasted. The agency could surely take that fish and donate it somewhere to feed some less fortunate folks.
Sure, that fish fed some other denizens of the deep. But damn, that just doesn't sit right with me, especially when there are laws in place prohibiting the waste of other species.

So as long as I call the authorities and promise them I didn’t mean to do it, I can keep any bluefin I catch?
What could go wrong.
This. I can assure you that there would be more "accidental catches" each year than the one or two boats that have to release a dead fish.

There’d certainly be a lot more that come up “dead”.

while we are at it let's make it legal to keep a deer that "ran out in front of you" and got hit

Might as well.
People need to get off their high horse.
shite happens the fish came up dead, had to release it, get over it, there’s bigger issues than a few fish getting released dead a year.

there's probably thousands of pounds of tuna freezer burned tuna in peoples freezers

Hell, when I have left over tuna, it goes into the chum freezer.

and don't think somewhere somehow someone will be bashing sport fishermen using this whole social media play by play

In addition to all that, they're probably getting interviewed by the feds right now. NOAA wants post release mortality reported but I guarantee they're getting grilled about what they saw when the weight came up, when they knew it was a bluefin, etc. By the letter of the reg they were supposed to cut the line as soon as they knew to increase the fish's chances. Those comments about knowing what it was when it came up to 100' could really frick them.

social media makes it easy for law enforcement nowadays
I watched the video of MGC when they hooked up to one of those bluefin and knew that would come back to bite them eventually

So it's perfectly fine to have a law against wanton waste of ducks, and at the same time throw a dead fish back because a limit has been reached?
This has nothing to do with a high horse and everything to do with not having consistent laws. If the fear is more "dead" fish coming up, you cancel that out by requiring that fish to be turned over. There is no incentive at that point to lying, because you don't get to keep it.
I just have a problem with laws differing for each species in terms of waste. Either make it illegal to waste any and all fish and game species, or don't have a law for any of them. You shot and killed the duck, don't waste it. You hooked a fish and it came up dead, something should be done with it.

wanton waste deals with making an effort to retrieve game not with what you do with the game once in your possession
wrong or right but in louisiana once its in your possession it's yours to do whatever you want with
you can legally shoot a limit of ducks, shoot a deer, catch a limit of trout, a marlin, or whatever and feed it to your dog or throw it all in the trash or woods
or bag it all up and stick it in the bottom of your freezer to get freezer burned

That’s the shitty part. There are still plenty of people who will intentionally hook and kill a fish they have no intention of keeping, for the picture, story, and the reputation.
There are charters in the northeast that get paid thousands of dollars just to take guys out and let them reel in a bluefin under commercial quota, where the fish is then sold at market. The vast majority of billfish are caught as “catch and release”. Doesn’t stop a good many from dying in the fight. Same goes for tarpon. We had like a 10 page thread last year over whether it was more or less ethical to kill 10 tarpon at the tarpon rodeo in grand isle versus the “conservationalists” in Florida who hook 100 on fly gear knowing full well at least 10 will be eaten by sharks.
It sounds great to say don’t let the fish go to waste, but in practice the current regs are in general the best deterrent against intentionally targeting bluefin.

Not exactly apples to apples.
Wanton waste stops people from shooting shite and letting it lay. Also, you know (or should) what you’re shooting. These guys didn’t know what they had, obviously as they thought it was a swordfish for 20hrs.

Gaff and release? I’ve seen that before. What a waste. Hate the regulations when they cause this
