I'd still pick the .308.

Possibly the perfect round for southern deer hunting. It will reach out just as far as you'd want to shoot and further. Mild recoil and more bullet choices than pretty much any other caliber.

If you wanted to take it elk hunting it will do the trick as well.

3.5” magnum buckshot is one of the hardest kicking things there is. It’s worse than most dangerous game rifle calibers.

While I haven’t shot anything bigger than 300WM, I will say that 3” mag buckshot kicks much harder. My cheek was bruised.

I use a 270. Why. I don’t really even know. It’s just barely a little different without being uncommon or hard to find bullets for.

About the 30-06 I’ll put it this way. If you're hunting anything that isn’t trying to kill you back, the 30-06 is a great choice.

They are both going to kill deer equally dead. Period. Flip a coin. Tell your wife or kid to decide for you, but those are two of the best possible deer hunting calibers available.

I vote for 270 for a deer caliber.

.308 easily. This will enable you to reason with the wife next year and get an M1A because "it's the same caliber."

My favorite rifle to shoot is a 7mm mag Browning BAR with a muzzle brake, but 7mm mag is too much for southern deer. Between the 270 and 30-06, they have similar recoil, but the 270 is a little flatter. Personally, I'd pick the 308 only because of the shorter action.

.30-06 gets you M1 Garand points with the wife so obviously .30-06 is the answer.

30-06 cause you can stick your chest out a little and look everyone in the eye when they ask what gun you shoot.

I’ve shot some deer with 130’s out of a .270 and the results were always pretty dramatic. No doubt it works very well.

That has been my set up since the mid 90’s and has served me well. I own other calibers but the .270 gets brought along most often

.30-06 is a better choice in the event you ever get to do some elk/moose hunting. Shooting deer, no appreciable difference between the two. The .270 will be a little tiny bit easier on the shoulder, the .30-06 has a little tiny bit more arse for big stuff. Just buy one.

OK! OK! OK!

I got the 270

Sorry I started another "What caliber is better" argument...

Damnit. You picked the wrong one!

Just kidding. There was no wrong choice to make there. Both are winners. But now comes the even harder part to obsess over.

What brand, type, weight, and style bullet are you going to use?

Check out Hornady superformance 140gr. They’re pretty damn hot, and trajectory wise about the same as a 130 corelock, but with a better bullet and a little more arse. I’ve been very pleased with mine the last 3 years after switching from 25yrs of 130 corelocks

As a retired old fart I have owned all of the above except the 7mm mag, I can say that all are exceptionally fine rounds that can and will, get the job done. In Mississippi since the primitive weapon Regs.changed, I have found that I use my TC 35 whelen almost exclusively. I have yet to feel handicapped using it
