Needless recoil is needless. And it’s in the eyebof the guy shooting the gun.

Some people don’t mind it. Most people do. And most people develop bad shooting habits from it. I shoot a 30-06 and I like the caliber a lot. Some say it has excessive recoil, but to me it’s just right. To you the 7 mag is. But to a lot of people it’s excessive. My brother had a Ruger 7 mag I used to shoot and it just wasn’t fun to shoot.

I’m a pretty cheap bastard and I always look at cost. 7 mag bullets cost a lot more 50% + many times and that’s just another reason I wouldn’t buy one. My brothers Ruger liked federal premiums and they are damned expensive. I buy bullets for my 06!and my sons 06. I go through 3-4 boxes a year with hunting and just shooting. That’s a decent amount of money to me.

7 mag is a great caliber, but it’s just not as good for me and where I hunt as a good 30 cal. JMHO. Cheers

How do you not get the recoil part?

I think it was pretty evident from the rest of my post, but if you're not great with context clues, I get it.

Because you know someone who doesn't mind the recoil?

Because it's being made to seem as though the recoil is much worse than it really is.

Is it more? Yes.

Is 2" more than 1"? Yes.

The difference isn't nerf gun vs getting hit by a truck.

I'm actually scared to shoot one.

My FIL gave his brother one once. It was a Browning A-bolt. I told him (FIL's brother) to be careful shooting that gun if you're in a tree stand. That it sucked to shoot. The brother, who I will add is only about 5'6" and maybe 130lbs, laughed it off saying that it wouldn't be an issue.

My FIL told me later that the brother had sold the gun. Said he took it out to sight it in, and was leaning over the handle bars on a 4-wheeler. It kicked him so bad it bloodied his nose and almost knocked him off the 4-wheeler.

I just laughed.

Ported Barrel tames the recoil of a 7mm mag quite a bit. I have a browning a bolt stainless stalker in 7mm mag with custom port job and it’s a pleasure to shoot. Had an old light arse savage 7mm mag that was miserable to shoot ... that round can suck recoil wise in the wrong rifle

ETA: I think it is too much gun for small southern whitetail. Ballistic tips out of a 7mm mag will make a mess of a sub 200 lb animal.

It’s overkill in a bad way too. Very fast and relatively light bullets are how you make a mess out of a deer.

I shot a 7mag abolt that had a boss brake on it and it wasn’t bad at all in the recoil department but holy hell was it loud. Kicked up a whole lot of dust also

I never really noticed the recoil on my 7-mag being that much worse than most other high powered rifles. I’ve shot it free handed tons of times and took deer, out of a climber in a tree stand, etc. I think my 12ga 3.5in buck shot probably kicks just as hard. And I find a lot of people exaggerate the damage it makes on deer. I shoot 150 grain soft points and shoot through the heart/lungs and most of the time only damage is through the rib cage.

For what it is worth, I’m shooting a 700 Remington.

Funny thing about recoil is that almost everyone shoots better with less of it. That's fact

3.5” magnum buckshot is one of the hardest kicking things there is. It’s worse than most dangerous game rifle calibers.

A 7 mag isn’t going to leave you seeing stars because the guns are usually pretty heavy and it slings a light bullet compared to some of the other belted mags. It’s still definitely not pleasant though.

270...will do everything the 30-06 but flatter

About the same trajectory as 7mm with less recoil

They have the 270 and 30-06 in stock now... Even though I've never hunted for a deer I'm partial to 270 cause that's what my dad used...

So NOW which one would the OB pick???
It's not going to make one bit of difference. Same case but different diameter bullets.

Then get that.

Recoil is also very dependant on the rifle.

My dad has a 7mag BAR and that thing recoils like a kitten. My Tikka 270wsm has a little pop though.

Either will be fine. It’s personal preference. I’ve always shot a 30-06 but would have zero problems hunting with 270

I'm kinda glad I don't rifle hunt anymore. I would agonize over caliber for months before buying then second guess myself for months after that when it isn't going to make any difference in the woods at all.

.30-06 is a better choice in the event you ever get to do some elk/moose hunting. Shooting deer, no appreciable difference between the two. The .270 will be a little tiny bit easier on the shoulder, the .30-06 has a little tiny bit more arse for big stuff. Just buy one.

I shot the 270 when I was a teenager, moved up to a 7 mag, then a 300 win mag. Bought a 30-06 because it was on sale at Bass Pro one day. I use that 30-06 more than any of the previous three. Manageable recoil, good bullet variety, and shoots Cheap Core Lokt and American Whitetail ammunition just fine.

For a Bolt Gun: If I was going to have to pick just one of those, it would be the 30-06 for hunting due to the more options on bullet weight and style.

The 270 shoots 130 and 150 grain bullets predominately, IIRC. I love that rifle, it just doesn't have the versatility in easily acquired bullets for me.

The 7 Mag is a monster on whitetail deer. And it has some heavier bullets that you can select.

The 308 is more of an AR / Black Rifle caliber to me. I would not argue over it's value as a hunter, it just isn't a gun I like for a bolt action. If OP has suppressors, then that brings the 308 into play and into the front runner. 308 Subsonic is everywhere and can be used to shoot pigs (or the uncollared neighborhood dog).

There’s lots of second guessing you can do for bow hunting too. Am I using the best broadhead? Which rest should I use? I second guess the shot out of everything.
