to many variables buckwheat …. what's your intended use of either cartridge ? Long Range shooting matches at 800-1000 yds, elk/bear hunting, planning to shoot iron sights or mount a scope, 100 yard rifle at the range or hunting club, $ budget ???

shot a 220# buck last year with a 45-70 at about 70 yds. It was a buddy's CVA single shot to see if I liked it and wanted to buy it off him. When the bullet hit, the deer looked like Mike Tyson punched it, stumbled backyard and fell over. But I was surprised to recover the bullet between the hide and shoulder on the "exit" side. Thought it would have more power. Then I started looking at bullet options for the Whelen and there appears to be more than the 45-70. And for whitetail inside of 150 yds, the Whelen is perfectly adequate, flatter shooting, and more bullet options. So, I offered to buy my buddy's CVA Whelen instead - he wouldnt let it go, loved it too much!

I shoot a .444 as well and curious why a .35 is better. Or would it be better in my situation? I hunt public land and my shots are typically less than 100yds. I've never missed with this gun and have never had one run more than 25yds.

My thought on the 45-70 or .35 would be to get the less expensive one and add a nice scope to it.

It has plenty of power and it expended all that energy into the deer. If a bullet exits an animal, it's still carrying some of it's energy and therefore did not put all of it's "power" into the animal. I guarantee you, that deer thought it had been hit by a train.

The 35 is only better in that it's faster and flatter shooting.

Unless you are ear holing buffalo on horseback with a 45-70, 35 Whelen is the better cartridge for hunting.

After hunting with both calibers, a 45-70 is great out to around 200:yards, while a 35 Whalen is an excellent 300 yard caliber. I used my 45-70:in primitive weapon season. I have used my TC 35 Whalen all firearm season long. Those 225 and 250 grain bullets are hard to beat.

They make rounds down to 180gr for the 35. At that weight there is almost no difference between it and a 06.

You should consider the 6.6 Creedmoor,,,,,IDK why, it just seems like anytime someone brings up centerfire round, the Creedmoor evangelist come out the woodworks claiming it can remove skunk-scent, catch more sac-a-and improve your chances of not catching HIV.
