So it says “voluntary sample”. Wonder if the hunter simply wanted to test his/her deer? Or did it give reason to warrant testing? (Was the deer showing signs)
Just curious, bc if everyone got their deer tested, what would we find- OR
How happy would you be that a CWD was processed where yours was and contaminated all the deer that were processed there. (Which is a scary as hell thought)

it really should become mandatory within a certain range where CWD has been identified. No way to remotely know what is going on without that. If it is not mandatory, it will get out of control until it is too late.

I was cleaning a deer last night and thinking about this. I killed him in a county where CWD testing isn’t mandatory, but just thinking that you might contaminate your meat when you sever the spine, or having it processed where a CWD deer comes in bothers me.

Just curious,
Lots of clubs are doing this as a club policy.

There could be twenty deer standing in a field, 15 of them infected, and you wouldn't be able to tell. The only time you can assume they may have it is when they're literally at death's doorstep. This, in my opinion, is what makes it so scary. I can't just go out and identify the infected ones to remove. Otherwise, this thing would be stopped in its tracks.

How would one go about sending a sample off to be tested for CWD?

I know this doesn’t help unless you’re in the locale but I heard the MDWF place at Tourqot (sp?) has a sample drop off. That’s off 43 and the Trace on the rez. I’m sure there are similar stations all over the state.

I still have concerns even if I get my stuff sampled. What if the processor gets a CWD deer unknowingly. Could still infect your meat I think. And they don’t require health code permits like restaurants so I don’t even know if they’re regulated by anyone.

Damn. I was afraid this would start happening. We're just down the road in the outer radius in sharkey county. I have hardly hunted this season so far, but have been thinking about it a lot.

Exactly. They will get mixed.

I talked to a processor here in NW Ms the other day. He is outside of any CWD zones. The state does not have any extra requirements for him or any processor he knows. He uses a dumpster for hides, bones and other leftovers. It gets hauled off once a week, I assume to the landfill.
I did not discuss how he goes about his job, and cleaning equipment from deer to deer. He processes 250-325 deer a year.

If I was in Mississippi, I'd have every deer I killed sampled. When they come back safe, I'd process them myself.

As it is now, I'm paranoid about CWD showing up in MS, and I'm in LA hunting south of I-12.

I am with you BRgetthenet.

I hunt in NELA and this stuff is scary. I have a thing a deer chili going right now.

I use a processor because they do it better and more efficient....but I am at a point to require manadatory testing for CWD...I’ll then process the deer myself.

I hunt in Missouri. Some counties are required to have deer tested. Mine is not, but I volunteered to have it tested.

When an autoclave can't kill it the shiate is really bad.
Watching someone die from it is even worse.
