Ok, so I've yet to go deer hunting this year. And I'm considering not even going at all. The more I read about CJD and its link to CWD the less I get venison hungry. Am I being irrational? fyi I hunt about 90 min from where the two CWD deer were found.

I am not sure if it is irrational. I hunt 25-30 miles north of the deer found in Ponotoc. I am not sure what to do either. I have 3 kids and I damn sure don't want them getting sick. I haven't seen any deer close enough to shoot with my bow, but gun opens Saturday. I am not real excited about going...

Had a guy at work tell me one of his employees found a CWD deer while scouting Shipland WMA a couple of weeks ago. He showed me a pic and it was an emaciated , younger-looking doe. Allegedly the one that tested positive in Issaqueena county. He told me this before the MDWFP posted it on their website. TIFWIW

Those high $$ clubs won't be able to give that stock away if this thing gets going good.

Yes. A little.

One of the best ways to mitigate the spreading of the disease is to reduce population. You staying at home doesn't help. Thin your herd.

No doubt

The Mississippi River deer club boom may go bust in the very near future if this mess is not dealt with ASAP.

Then they better start investing in pharmaceutical research companies ASAP because the only way to get it under control is a cure or vaccine.

I believe some states up north have proven depopulation doesn't work.

Louisiana needs to be proactive before this jumps the river and is in the delta.

Who would handle that? Dr. Strain or the LDWF or some combo?

Can the state ban food piles like corn, rice bran, etc and that would help?

This is nauseating.

It was mentioned in the other larger thread that Wisconsin and others have come to that conclusion.

The MeatEater podcast that discusses CWD with a wildlife guy is really good for anyone that is interested in this topic. No real conclusions, but basically reaffirmed what most of us know - no confirmed cases to humans yet, lots of people still eating them in infected areas, not enough info on the disease & it's some scary shite.

You can substitute cwd with cjd and come to the same conclusions imo.

Yeah, they talk about CJD and TSEs in general a lot in that show. It's pretty informative and enjoyable, but didn't make me feel any better

MIL’s husband didn’t get a pos diagnosis until he was to the point of incohearance. Zombie like is the only descriptive word I would use to describe his condition.

your FIL died of CJD?

That makes two posters on here have relatives die of it. Suppose to be only 1 in 800k chance of getting it so that's really crazy.

wasn't Norway or Sweden successful in knocking it out in reindeer? I think they had to kill the entire herd but it worked. Not making a statement, I'm asking.

This was encouraging to read,

quote:

Based on the prevalence in Nordfjella—estimated at 1%—Lund guesses that CWD may have been present for only 5 to 7 years, which could mean contamination is minimal. “There’s a good chance they can solve the problem,” says wildlife ecologist Michael Samuel of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Quick response has been shown to work before: In 2005, routine testing revealed CWD on two deer farms in central New York. Strict regulations prevented the disease from spreading. The state has seen no cases since.

But, it means that the state of MS would have to act, and act fast. Which, we all know, has no chance of happening.

Then, you go on to read this and it’s more sobering news

quote:

But it’s also possible that CWD is lurking elsewhere in Norway, the panel noted. The agencies will collect another 20,000 samples in the coming hunting season, and they plan to continue monitoring for years to come. The specter of CWD has also alarmed the European Food Safety Authority, which released a report in January recommending that seven nearby countries all begin 3-year sampling programs.
