Louisiana has tested 9,000 deer since 2002 and none have had it.

How many did Mississippi test since 2002 before they found these?

I see. I’m wondering if they just test everything or if people are consuming venison with CWD.

I read a comment from a YouTube video last night where someone said something like CWD can’t be passed to humans by ingested venison that was infected.

So far, the cases we’ve read about here have stated they believe it to be contracted by transfusions related to surgery.

GREENHEAD,

What’s the research saying about that?

It may not of been found in Louisiana, but to think it is not present, and somehow just stopped at the state line is stupid. With the 3 confirmed and 1 suspected case in Mississippi, spread out as far as they are is a telling tale, I suspect now that they have as many testing locations set up that in the next month we will see many more cases across the state of Mississippi

We just don’t know, there is one study showing a monkey or similar animal contracted the diseas after being fed large amounts of infected meat, but a lot more research needs to be done, as far now, use your own judgment, but in Mississippi it is fairly easy to get a specimen tested

Exactly. If Louisiana set up the same kind of testing areas, how many would we find? They will wait until one is accidentally found then take it serious.

Look up Kuru and Papua New Guinea. The tribe were cannibals and ate their dead. CJD was spread through consumption of the meat but was much worse for those that consumed the brain. The men only ate the meat whereas the women and children ate the brain which inturn were diagnosed with much higher rates of CJD. With that being said if they can infect a monkey by exposing it to high doses of brain matter with CWD maybe it's possible through meat consumption.

Louisiana killed and tested around 300 deer last winter in Madison and East Carroll Parishes. They are taking it seriously. And if they tested every deer killed in the state, and found CWD, what would they do then? There is nothing to be done.

There is plenty that can be done to slow the spread. If we know where its boundaries are we can help save areas that do not have it yet. So in your opinion we may as well accept it will be or is everywhere so who cares? If we knew we had it rules need to be changed and people will take necessary steps to prevent its spread seriously. The annual deer harvest reported approaches a quarter million. Since 2002 we have tested a whopping 9000 deer and killed approximately 4 million. They are sure taking it serious.

Can we get a sticky and get all the threads dealing with this put in it? There is good info in them.

If you haven't yet I suggest going and reading back in other threads we've had in regards to this. There is more detailed info in them but long story short. While there is nothing definitive yet, reasonable deduction, studies and other cases point to that it is likely and possibly has already been transmitted to humans.

could you imagine the outcry in this country if say a county was quarantined and every deer killed, removed and properly disposed of.

There are no boundaries. It’s scattered out as far as Norway. Louisiana has halted the importation of carcasses and heads. Not much more can be done.
Feed bans and high fence bans might help. They might not. Increasing season limits might help. Might not. Killing all of the deer will keep it from spreading, but that’s not practical or possible. It’s been around 50 years and no one has a clue about how to limit the spread of CWD.

Correct there is no proven way to stop it, Wisconsin has almost given up even trying to slow it down. The wildlife biologist I talked to who has worked on this for close to two decades painted a pretty bleak picture. He said it is pretty much going to take a vaccine in order to stop it.

Id hope they would be aggressive enough in our state to 2 two things immediately.

#1 Stop all supplemental feeding in the wild. Corn piles to food plots shut er down

#2 Quarantine all high fence quadraped farming and eliminate it within 6 months statewide.

Those 2 thing along with the current regs on not importing brain material will put us ahead of the eventual curve.

What's scary to me is I use the same knife to quarter as I do to cut the spine.

Won't be doing that any more.

To add, Lord knows what goes on at these jake leg processors, too.

I was talking to a friend that hunts at Ashland plantation, north of Natchez bordering Boelte property right south of Anna's bottoms. He had a couple pics of emaciated bucks that they had just chalked thier condition up to being run down from the rut. I've never seen deer that rough looking from rutting hard. This was last yr and the pics were from the previous season.

Net, here's a study on whether CWD can spread to humans. It was published in 2004, so I don't know if there is anything more recent, but it ultimately concludes that it is possible, but unlikely, that it can jump to humans. LINK

quote:

Increasing spread of CWD has raised concerns about the potential for increasing human exposure to the CWD agent. The foodborne transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy to humans indicates that the species barrier may not completely protect humans from animal prion diseases. Conversion of human prion protein by CWD-associated prions has been demonstrated in an in vitro cell-free experiment, but limited investigations have not identified strong evidence for CWD transmission to humans. More epidemiologic and laboratory studies are needed to monitor the possibility of such transmissions.
