For 1000yd deer rifle

That shite doesn't even compute.

There isn't a soul on the planet that needs to be making a 1000yd shot on a deer. Holy frick.

It was the recoil pad, limbsaver almost eliminates the need to brake a 300

There are definitely people out there plenty capable in making that shot.

I am not one of them even though I practice a lot at 600yds. Lots of factors come into play at 1000yds.

I was just responding to a previous statement.

Yea I agree. Long range for me is 300 yards and I have stands where you can see/shoot over a mile.

I doubt very many people would argue for 7 mag, most would argue its a little bit light for elk.

There are some topics you can listen to him on. Rifles/ballistics/energy/etc. are not on that list.

The best all around north American hunting caliber is pretty universally agreed to be .338 win mag.

Agreed to by whom? I can get needing the horsepower for the big bears. Anything short of that theres zero "need" for a .338wm other than personally wanting to use one.

It's extremely popular here for that reason. And it is a necessity. Carry one firearm that can cover all your needs, you may be stranded where you are for days.

I love the round. Works on deer, bear, goats..short distance, long distance...

Stalking is much different than hunting over feed, I know a lot of folks who use it for Elk as well.

If you are wanting to shoot long range, the .300win mag wins hands down. The 7mag isn’t even in the same class when looking at ballistic coefficient and energy down range. I had to prove this to my brother and dad in Montana. We shot targets at 300-450 yards in a 15-20mph cross wind. My hold for wind was 1/4 - 1/2 of what theirs was due to my bullet being heavier and a better BC.
If you’re looking at energy down range, the .300wm wins again and it’s not even close. You can look at the math or even the movement of a Gong on impact.

Recoil? That depends on the gun and the set up.

If you are going to use a 7 Mag. for elk hunting, you need to be able to pick your shot precisely and the 7 Mag. will suffice nicely, but you'll not find me hunting giant old bulls in the heavy timber with any 7 Mag. load! Yes, I have and will hunt them in semi-open country with a 7 Mag. and proper ammo, no problem.

At least the 243 wasn't discussed this time.

From a few reloading manuals:

Hornady - powerful and flat shooting enough for anything on North American Continent

Nosler - probably the most useful belted magnum. Its the best elk cartridge, period.

Speer - if the owner of a 270 or 30-06 wants to move up to a more powerful cartridge to extend the number of species he can hunt, the 338 is a much better option than any of the various 300 magnums.

Lyman- the shooter who wants one cartridge for a wide variety of game and who can see past the. 30-06 would do well to learn to shoot a 338 win mag. it rivals the 375 h&h as being the most versatile of all big game cartridges

Hodgon- if one cartridge deserves to be called the elk cartridge, it is certainly 338 win mag

Barnes (written by a woman) - the 338 win mag has been my caliber of choice for hunting just about everything

Me too. I just worry it won’t be around in 20 years. You’re not saving much weight or length with the WSM either
