Hoping someone could tell me their experience hunting with one...I am thinking of taking mine on an exotic hunt in Texas...am I better off taking 7 mm? I'm not a serious dear hunter but would like to try it for hunting

My brother and one of my friends kids use .300 black out and seem to drop everything in its tracks. There is just going to be a range limitation.

Don’t use it for exotics unless you are only hunting black buck. Other than that, need something with more knockdown power IMO. Almost all other exotics are big body animals. It will kill whatever you shoot eventually most likely, but I wouldn’t chance it getting away and dying later on. Not ethical. A few years ago, on our company ranch in the hill country, we were tracking an axis deer and came across a dead axis. We initially thought, this is it, we found it, but the blood trail was a little away from it a s kept on going. We loaded up that axis and kept tracking until we found the other one. When we got them back, the first one was still fairly fresh and it was cold out, so we skinned it. We found a green tip lodged in the side away from the entry hole. One of our guys shot it with a 5.56 and it slowly bled out over the course of 2 days and finally died. Just not ethical to shoot something like that without a round that has enough energy and expansion to kill it right away. I know 300 and 5.56 are not the same, but the 300 still doesn’t have enough energy to ensure it will take down a big body animal.

What type of excotics?
What range is the most you would intend to shoot?
What bullet do you have for it?
Take your 7mm

200 yards and in it is good to go on stuff like whitetail, pronghorn, and blackbuck. Bigger animals you may want more juice. I have seen people kill up to elk with a .300blk but there are a ton of better choices. So your answer really depends on what game you want to shoot.

The 300 Blackout is fine with Supersonic expanding bullets to 100-150 yards. I’ve seen many pigs get stacked up with it. Even with the subsonic rounds at 50 yards.

It’s questionable just how ethical it would be beyond that distance or on anything other than light skinned deer sized game. The ft/lbs of energy just aren’t there.

I’d take the 7mm to give myself a margin of safety especially if your quarry is African game.

What exotic species?
300blk would be fine for blackbuck, axis does, goats withing 150 yards with supersonic ammo.

Id bring the 7mag. I wouldn't take a road trip to hunt and be worried about the gun I brought.

I can only give you the experience I’ve seen from my kids using it. The gun is 6 for 6. Four does a 7pt and a 6pt. The 6 pt was a 240lb brute shot rt in the shoulder at 120 yards. He went about 80 yards but bled great. All of the other deer went from 0-50 yards. They shoot the 110gr Hornady out of it. There are better choices out there I know but it would be up to the challenge if you put the lead where it needs to go

My son shot a few deer with one, we shot 110 supers suppressed. The deer all died, but the lack of blood was noticeable on all of them. The suppressor changes everything with the bullet, but ear protection and communication with him were a bigger concern for me with him being a new hunter. I moved him to a 308 this year, still shooting suppressed and I think it'll work out much better for us.

It's basically a .30-30. You have to treat it as such.

I have used one to shoot hogs, and it's good out to 100 yards or so, but after that, penetration may be an issue.

I have not shot deer with it; so, I can't speak to its performance there.

100 yds and in it's fine for whitetail sized game. Bottom line is that SHOT PLACEMENT is most critical consideration. Higher veocity calibers increase the margin of error.

FWIW - 3 deer I've shot w/ my 300 blk were 75 yd lung shots w/ 150 gr Winchester Whitetail. One dropped and two ran <50 yds. None of them passed through....blood trail was almost non-existant having only an entry hole to spew from. Internal damage was substantial.

My dad deer hunts with one and has had zero problems. Hasn't taken a shot over 75 yards so far except in Texas and He missed that one... I think it was @150 and he's shooting a red dot. Not really set up for distance... more close range like his Arkansas stands.

Deer and other small body animals are no problem. Exotics are a problem if we are talking axis, nilgai, audad, etc. Depending on where he is looking to hunt, it could be decent distance shots or fairly close. All depends. I know I wouldn’t bring my 300blk on an exotic hunt when I have other calibers at my disposal. Easy decision.

Curious what kind of round he was shooting. Of the plastic tipped bullets, Hornady's are all red, Varmageddon are all black, Barnes are all black. Nosler Accubond are all white and Nosler Ballistic Tip are different colors (green=30 caliber and yellow=22 caliber).

IF you can find the Barnes VOR-TX 110Grn round is perfectly capable taking a whitetail out to 150 yards.

Good pick up. How'd I forget about the Z-Max??? I've still got about 1000 of those "zombie green" bullets. I really liked the Z-Max and hated to see them discontinued. If anyone's wondering, they're a V-Max w/ a zombie green colored tip. They may've also used the zombie green color in non V-Max bullets, as well.
