Interesting. What size engine is your kicker? What would you suggest using on a, let’s say, 14-18ft flat?

You can get a Yamaha 6 or something that. My old 40 hp was on its last legs so I carried one for a while.

I've run my gheenoe in the river and have a trolling motor if mine craps out.

Trolling motor is good to get yiu to a bank. That's it.

I wouldnt run the river in dark

I see a few flat boats with anywhere from a 6 to 9.9 depending on length.

I'm out on the Ross Barnet Reservoir (Jxn, MS) all summer and know it well. It is the most gentle, lazy, safe, forgiving body of water you will find and I'm still scared going out at night.

Yes he does. Hopefully they made it to land.

Not sure what the water temps are in river up there currently, but Hypothermia could have been an issue too.

Is it not normal for y'all to have a trolling motor or "kicker"?

It was young kids in a duck boat, most flat boats/ aluminums have trolling motors but depending on what kind of duck boat it was and if they were hunting directly out of it with a blind they may not have. If it was a smaller boat you are talking 12V potentially and one battery anything could go wrong.

Since they found the life jackets, I have a hard time believing they were hit by a barge. But who knows.

Given that, it sounds like they were thought to have made it ashore and the search was on land right still? Hoping they are just hiding out by a fire somewhere.

If they were wearing them

ETA.... not being judgmental, I have been in the river in small boats many times without a PFD, and that is not Something I am bragging about

Certainly but if they weren’t wearing them and were hit by a barge or sunk the chances of both being found close together and in good shape I would think would be very slim right?

Were they found close to each other?

Were they in good shape? Although I could see them being hit by barge and loose life jackets still be in good shape

Do you think the barge pilot would have made a call for help if he seen it happening I would think someone on the barge would have seen are heard something

Heard anything?... no

See anything? If it was a small push boat pushing a single probably so, a 10k HP push boat pushing a string ???? Most probably not

Apparently the dog was actually left at home and family is now hoping the dog can help searchers locate the owner and his friend.
Thread is Really heart wrenching.
And at the same time a real show of goodness and community among outdoorsman and country folks in general.

update from the link FB family friend link provided in an earlier *post

Yea you got a point there. That river is pretty rough. I grew up on the river at simmesport and that river could get rough also.

Going on day three now since they left home.

Every hour is critical now. And I’m not liking their chances at this point.

Went to church in McComb today and the pastor there is a cousin to the younger boy. He was pretty choked up over it. Hope they find them, but if not the good news is he said he knows both of those boys have been baptized.
