I use to work as a diver all over the southeast. Every time I went to a new location, I would hear this same story from the locals at the boat ramp. I've seen some big cats, and been ran into by them, hard enough to hurt, but I've never seen any that were more than maybe 175 lbs or so, but you always hear that same story. Now, I have run into some big arse alligators.

We do this up by Mayersville, when low the river is not treacherous.

I've heard those same stories for years. It's weird that the huge catfish are always at the dam with their mouths open eating. You never hear about them doing anything else like spawning.

I wonder if those catfish ever go back and tell the other catfish “every time I go to the dam there’s a damn human diver bumping into me” “He was the size of a Volkswagen”

Pfff, how would a catfish know how big a Volkswagen is?

Volkswagen sized catfish are thick as fleas on a hound on any river system in the world that I have fished....but they are especially thick around dams in the SE United States. They are brilliant creatures though, well known to exist, NEVER caught or even photographed. It may well be that they actually are the smartest critters on earth including man....

Also similar stories about anything with pilings in the range of Jewfish (Goliath Grouper). However they ain't near as smart or elusive and have been photographed, caught, eaten and mounted many times. Damn things are so thick in places you best get any fish hooked to the boat and quick lest you find yourself sharing with a shockingly huge grouper....

I was putting the boat to bed one evening when a ford ranger pu pulled up to the dock with 2 sailors in the cab and 2 sitting in the bed. They were excited as hell and wanted me to see the nice grouper they had speared. I walked up, looked in the bed, and sure as hell there lay a jewfish, well over 200 pounds and probably closer to 300, barely concealed in the bed of the truck. I asked them if they knew what it was and they responded it was a grouper. I assured them they were correct and asked if they knew what kind to which they responded "one of the BIG kind". They had no idea what they had done. I told them. Excitement immediately turned into concern about being shipped back stateside. Apparently they all shot the thing at almost the same time, having seen it, surfaced, came up with a plan and carried it out. I don't think they told anyone other than me about that fish or what their plans for it were but there was a glut of grouper at the jerk pit and the cuban cafe for about a week. Given the laxity of enforcement of fishing regs in the area I am not certain they had done anything wrong....we were supposed to stick to regs in Florida where it would have most definitely been wrong but they allowed bow-fishing for Tarpon, Permit and Lobster so who knows?

Those VW sized catfish are the smartest critters on earth....they are apparently widespread and numerous yet nary a one has ever been photographed or caught or even found washed up dead....there has to be bunches of them given the number of people who have seen them or know someone who has so the only explanation is that they are incredibly intelligent....thus having knowledge seemingly unavailable to a normal catfish, say one the size of a riding lawn mower, is not nearly as far fetched as some things one could name.....

I dont understand the time or place or the reason for his post here. It is like he doesnt realize he is posting in a thread about a devastating loss, he just has to squeeze in some obscure tale.

Holy shite. That is tragic. Embarassingly, I got caught up in the holidays and hadn't heard or thought about them since earlier when this thread was going. Truly tragic. I hope they find them soon. Dumb question, but with the river and its current, do they think they will have to expand the search area to account for the current?

About 5 years ago two boys drowned in that same area. Young commercial fishermen. They found one of them a couple of months later about 100 miles downstream. I don't think they ever found the other one.

Truth is, they may never find either one of these young men. If they got hung up on something on the bottom, it is likely they'll decompose where they are and that will be that.

The only way the bodies will surface is through decomposition as the body bloats, and after all this time, it is getting more and more unlikely.

I truly feel for their families, knowing they are gone, but not having them home for closure. Really sad.
