Macondo is what they named this well. It's from One Hundred Years of Solitude.

I'm opposite end of almost as coastal as could be ... our family keeps telling us to move. I'm like "um, you can't pack up farmland!".

i've been trying not to watch the video continuously in hopes that i could look at it and notice differences, and every time i look at it it seems like the pressure of whatever is coming out of the riser keeps decreasing.

Are you adding in 2100 psi boost from seawater at that depth?

It was driving me nuts so I did the calculation the other way (adding the water pressure) and got the same answer. I feel better now.

This is What I know.

1. Reporters are idiots.
2. Got word (4:30pm yesterday)that the well pressure had dropped significantly.

3. At that time they had 3+ hours left of mud on the ship and another 12 hours of mud on site.

Things I want to know. Why is the stuff coming out on top of the riser lighter in color on the left side.

Lighting effect or is that due to gas?

I don't doubt that you got the real word. But it does lead me to make this comment.

People in the oilfield tend to talk a lot of shite. The captain of the standby vessel thinks he is an expert on what is happening on the rig floor. The crane operator can see the rig floor but doesn't know what is happening in the driller's shack, but he will sometimes speak as though he does. The mud logger thinks he is an expert in geology and micropaleontology.

I have seen this happen again and again. So I am just saying. There are about five people who REALLY know what is happening, and who REALLY understand it. Maybe ten. And they are all pretty dadgum busy right now.

PS. I am not knocking captains or crane ops or MLs. I am just saying it is hard to get the real picture in these circumstances.

And so day two begins --

COTiger, just curious if you have heard anything you can post this morning?

I don't think BP will run out of mud. If you watched the 14 minute video from them, they have three ships full of it out there.

As long as mud is coming out of that top hole, the spewing muddy stuff, and not oil it means they have control of pressure in the well.

Does that mean that the cement will hold that the well won't betray them? No.

But it is a good sign this morning.

If successful the mud will completely fill the casing, displacing the oil and gas. Has anyone figured the volume in barrels inside that casing from BOP to the perforations? I have heard conflicting info as to the depth of the well. Is it 18,000' or 13,000'? (18 less the 5,000 ocean depth)

I think you meant to say 18,000' Measured Depth
13,000' Below Mud Line
