a correct merge is using all available space until you can safely merge over, most of the time the issue is selfish people bunched up because god forbid someone merge in front of you, so you end up running out of lane. Then some low T pansy makes a limp wrist'd post on a message board about it.

i'll sometimes use the open. but 2 things i don't do.
I don't race up the line like nascar. I'll calmly drive down the lane.
I don't cut someone off at the front like i have a right of way. I'll ease my way into the merge when its being offered like a courteous civilized human being.

The people that are really stupid in all this zipper merge nonsense is the people who try to merge 500-1000 feet before the merge point.
They back up the open lane of traffic and when they get in the people waiting in the open lane zip to the merge point and make the OP pissed off.
If people in the merging lane would use the entire lane to the merge point, the zipper could get established

This never happened.
No one cut you off.
A merge occured.
You lost your perceived "place in line" and you're upset about it.
Drivers in both lanes are expected to facilitate the merge.
Your "right of way" at that moment doesn't exist.

This is precisely why I don't let those people in. I want them to go all the way to the merge point. i want everyone behind them to go all the way to the merge point.
When I get to the merge point, I let one care in and then keep going.

None of this is actual legal reality. The continuous lane has the right of way. A merging vehicle has no right of way to cause an accident.

It’s the assholes who fly up behind you using the ending lane when there is 0 traffic that I have an issue with. I have no problem with folks in the primary lane gunning it and blocking those douchebags. It’s the ending lanes responsibility to merge safely.
But sadly the majority of this country are brain dead idiots and don’t know proper driving etiquette.

you are talking a lot of non sense about different aspects of the merging system other than the a-hole being non courteous racing to the front and thinking they have legal establishment to cut off and hit any vehicle they deem they want to get in front of.

Zipper merge is like socialism. On paper it makes sense and could be a good thing for all involved.
In practice it involves humans who have no regard for everyone else.

First time I saw a sign for zipper merging was last March in Sedona, AZ.

No
You are the dumb frick
Zipper merging is meant for interstate or hwy merging only
Not construction zones and people skipping the line
Not for city streets when two lanes go to 1
In the prior two cases, by all means block the jackasses skipping the line

absolutely responsibility is on the lane ending side to merge safely to the other side.

Had a guy follow me all the way to my driveway after he tried to stick to the vehicle ahead of him and squeeze in rather than zippering behind me correctly. He tailgated me all the way to my neighborhood then to my driveway then left when I stopped at the end of my driveway and got out of my truck to pick up my garbage cans.
That old bastard lives in my neighborhood and I see him every now and then. Haven’t had the opportunity to return the favor and tailgate his arse all the way to his driveway yet.
