Yeah but the smell would keep anything dangerous away.

I have faith in my sight and bullet placement to inflict mortal wounds. I would use it in hopes of disarming aggressors, yet being efficient in hunting small game.

Download and print a geological survey of the Black Hills.

Since this is a hypothetical, I hypothesize being a pharmacist and that I have a case of penicillin capsules sitting around the house. I'll be the miracle doc who cures the clap.

Between those two I should do alright.

Because I can carry an absolute ton, and it’s big enough to kill almost any game animal in North America.

.38 is the modern equivalent of the .36, which was in wide use, and centerfire cartridges had been available for a few years. You probably couldn't find an exact fit but maybe an enterprising gunsmith could adapt something for you.

You'd still have a problem with black powder. Smokeless was about a decade in the future so your weapon would be badly gunked up after a few rounds.

Yes, certainly .38 SC. maybe LC. Whether the old cartridges will work in a modern .38 is an open question. Modern LC cartridges will fire in a .38 SPC.

Watching the OP tighten up what is 5 items and if you want to live and not be hunted taking the most gold you can for 4 items (if you have it) and a bottle of broad spectrum antibiotics (if you have it) may be the best course of action. You can buy guns and ammo along with most anything else you need.

Penicillin
Change into my coldest weather clothing.
Grab gold coins
Print off timeline of events and gold strikes post 1878 in Deadwood and all of SD. Include Bakken oil region maps.

Arrive in town and buy shares of Homestake mining Co.
Go to land office and purchase every inch of land possible in the Bakken oil region.

Two dental floss and three Gold American Eagles

ETA: There are a lot of great answers above, like a map of where gold was discovered, but I don’t have that in my house.

Sure you do. If you have a phone or computer, I’d consider that in your house. Download, print, profit.
