Yeah, without turnarounds & OT, that don't happen either

I'm an operator in a refinery for a major oil company. It takes 3 years to get to top pay and equals up to about 95k a year with no overtime.

Including bonus I made 75k my first year with no overtime.

I think you have to consider why the job has attracted back to back thieves, especially given the high pay of the job. And if they are willing to give it to you without experience (?) I would have some serious reservations about what actually goes on in that job and why it is such an unstable position.

Companies make bad hires all the time, but companies also make jobs that innately attract poor candidates. That could be a culture thing, a money thing, or a management thing.

Stay in school and get your paper. It means something and no one can take it away from you.

I had a similar situation but a later point in life in a different industry. I chose the latter and it worked out even better than I thought. Those kinds of opportunities are few and far between.

The reality is that you work your arse off to make real money. Don't expect to coast for 40 or so hours and make six figures. Most real successful people work way more than 60 hours. The bennies are critical too. 401K... how much they match, health and disability insurance, etc...

Hypothetically...

1. Soph in college/engineering major/3.2gpa/going to school for free

2. $110k/yr + truck/ins/gas/phone covered
Overseeing/apprentice a medium sized food distribution company (in other words, something completely unrelated to your college major)
Neg- it's 5/12s but no weekends(60hrs-only $33/hr roughly)

Not sure about benefits/vaca/potential raises/bonuses/ability to cut hours & fill some with other people
Possibly training to take over at some point

What do you do? You're 38, how bout now?

Take the job. The credits aren't going anywhere. Two years of work could cover the remaining tuition and then some. You aren't coming out making $110,000 with an engineering degree anyways...

I didn't read all the way through, so apologize if it's been covered.

How are you doing in engineering? Sophomore year is when it starts getting tough. Decent GPA, but be critical of yourself and ask yourself how you expect to do in later courses.

Being 38, you'll come out of school in a tough spot. Many companies favor life experience, but may look down on coming out so late due to some ingrained philosophies and having to "retrain" someone who will be fairly set in their ways. Making $110k in engineering within 5 years isn't unreasonable, particularly in O&G.

Otherwise, the offer on the table seems great. The hours are long and will be miserable. You'll need to ensure they are not a long term expectation. The decision is definitely much easier earlier in life, or if you have no other considerations such as wife, kids, etc. However, the earning potential of engineering will exceed this offer. The "go back to school" after a few years argument also becomes less relevant as your age is starting to get up there and will affect engineering job offers.

Good post. Thanks
3.2, but I blame it not being higher on getting back into it after 20 years & skipping an algebra/trig refresher & jumping head first into calc 1&2. Other than that it's been pretty easy. The next 2 semesters look pretty brutal, talk to me in May, lol. I'm confident, but maybe a little naive. As far as weighing money options..., that piece of paper is more important than anything right now. Just the satisfaction of fixing a past mistake. I said earlier, it's not like I was broke for 20 years and decided to go back. I'm set up pretty good. Earning a decent income while in school and the wife makes good $ too. So if I start out at 50 or 150, it's fine...as long as I can move up fairly quickly.
Soooo, this thread is pretty pointless because I made promises that quitting was never an option.

This job would probably always be an option. Going back to school isn't. And if I did, id have to foot the bill. This is the last and only chance left
