You should make close to that as an engineer and not have to work 5/12s.

Depends on the industry you're in and as an entry level guy, you will expected to put in extra time if you want to advance quickly. Entry level will not be 100K, likely a bit less than 6 figures depending on the specific degree and the industry/area.

If this hasnt been mentioned yet, what kind of engineer is the op looking to become?

The only plus side I see to becoming an operator is to quickly save up money to go back to school, but every day you wait decreases the probability you go back and finish your degree.

Paying for school in cash is a nice feeling, however that requires a lot of discipline from the OP.

As far as cash, most engineers I know dont make overtime, but they generally have a cushier lifestyle than most operators. Just my two cents.

Well. You may not exceed $110k/year as a civil engineer quickly. But it's a great degree with loads of options.

Yeah, I know. But that's also why I picked it. It interests me the most and remember, I've been working for 20 years. a somewhat small difference in money isn't priority 1.

I guess it all depends on where you work. If you working for a small private company then maybe not, but it also depends on the type of engineer, but I would say there is a better chance of him making more than $110k/yr as an engineer than him making less than $110k.

But if he is an engineer and makes $110k/yr he wouldn't have to work 5/12s to do so.

False. You must not be familiar with what engineers at plants make working 40 hours/week.

You are correct about what a guy can make though not 110K entry level and 40 hours a week is unlikely if you consider call outs, turnarounds, and the reality of what is usually expected of the engineers in most of the plants I've done work in.

It is a good gig , though, and once everything is smoothly operating you can go long periods working 45-50 with the occasional 40s and you do have a lot of fluff time during the day to handle any personal business by phone.

If you truly want to be a civil engineer and you are on track to graduate, as in not having to drop Calc 2 for the 2nd time and whatever else then I'd stay civil.

Given that, why is the job 5/12's? I mean what kinda work is it? Is it just be available for my phone for 5 hours, or manage a bunch of Hs dropouts doing deliveries and Bs managing on my feet for 12 hours everyday?

I would seriously question any job that requires a long term commitment to a crappy 12 hour shift. Why not hire an admin for 40 hours a week at $30k and have someone work a cushy $80k job? I realize there's more costs than just pay, but it makes for a much better work environment.

Wasn't gonna entertain it. 3/4 of my friends are pharmacists. They all been working 15 years and they don't make close to that. Must have left the Walmarts for Govt positions though. I prolly know Mr. Chrxs
