At least that’s what my South Texas neighbors say. As a transplant I gotta side with them. Idiot Oklahomo.

Ok that was a bit much just trying to fit in.

they cover Red Beans n’ Rice with a pile of raw onions and grated cheddar cheese unless you tell them not to

That's exactly how I 'doctor up' my red beans. Good to know someone else does that. I don't need the cheddar but raw onions on red beans is the BEST way to eat them.

They should have a little tram train going around for the lazy fricks like me that wouldn’t want to walk the entire length. It doesn’t need to be on a track like a people mover or other expensive tech. Maybe something like the Audubon Zoo Train.

Some of the passages between sections are no wider than an office hallway

I had a talk with him once about this. I said Jamie, you have the best red beans and rice in the city, why do you screw it up with onions and cheese?

He said, that’s what the patrons want. I got tired of them asking for it, so I think it’s stupid, but I complied.

That's funny if true. Treebeards on Market Square was the first place I had them that way - they asked if you wanted them, didn't just dump them on - and now I like them that way.

It might've also been the first place where I had a link of sausage served with the red beans, instead of ham or sausage cut up and mixed w/ the beans.

Is Doozo Dumpling still around in the park shops?

I used to get those twice a week but haven’t had them since COVID. The lady that ran it was the real life Seinfeld Soup Nazi haha.

Still there, and is manager now. They are huge. But, of course, now there is a 6’3 tranny in there too that stares everyone down and looks unhinged

The building above the tunnel owns and manages the part of the tunnel below… thus the wide range of doors.. passages and style.. some building keep it modest .. others have submarine door and can close off their lower tunnels..

Yes they have flooded thus the op comments on the revitalization… they were destroyed a while back ..

I have not been in them since they were redone…sounds nice

Well that is dumb in one way, but practical in another sense.

Do these “tunnels” flood?

I am guessing, are they deep enough to be considered a bomb/fallout shelter in a pinch if we got nuked? Of course that would probably also depend on where the bombs went off and the strength of the warheads. Also, I don’t think you could fit all of Houston’s 7 million people in them.

Someone mentioned Beck’s Prime, ive never visited Becks in the Tunnels, only the Kirby Dr location and one or two others.. but circa 10 or 15 yrs ago, Becks had the GOAT Houston burger, it was called the ‘TKO Burger’ and had some combination of cheddar, hickory sauce, bbq sauce, raw onions and a couple other things.. it was expensive even back then, but really hit the spot .. it isnt on the menu anymore but i did ask for it once when I visited more recently and they were able to make it for me.. as more time passes though im doubtful ill be able to get it in the future .

ETA the other GOAT Houston burger - and again i havent lived there in a while so take this with a pinch of salt- was the Peppercorn Ranch Burger at Pappas Burgers on Westheimer.. truly a remarkable burger , but again, very expensive .

Yes they absolutely flood. I remember being in downtown in 2004 and the tunnels were being cleaned up from the flood that happened in July of that year.

Back when I lived in Houston we went through two major floods, one being Harvey. I don’t ever remember the tunnels shutting down. Maybe some isolated places got water on the floor.

Ragin Cajun has only the original local. It think that tunnel one shut down well before Covid IIRL. Agree with Treebeards. Cant go wrong there. Beyond that I have not been down there post covid. Used to eat at Beck's prime quite a bit and its always solid if its still down there.

On my side of downtown (allen center) tunnels

Breakfast: Chick fil a, Otto's breakfast tacos and breakfast croissants, tacos a go go

Lunch: Leaf and grain, Chick fil a, Otto's grilled chicken sandwiches, pita express, district 7, post oak grill, mayuri, potbelly (as far as I walk).

Above ground from allen center:

Einstein bagles, zero's sandwiches, mendocino farms, downtown met, houston club. Very weak pizza selection, frank's is too far to walk, Russo's is the best option. If it's nice outside, walk to midtown for christians tailgate (burgers), the fish (best miso cod bento box in town), cyclone anayas (beef fajita tacos al carbon are some of my favorite in town), district 7, josephines.
