re: Your company's policy on vacation, PTO, sick leave, bereavement and holiday time?

5 days bereavement
A year? WTF, you work in a retirement home or something? How does any person need 5 days a year? I guess if they don't accrue that somewhat makes sense you just use them when someone dies. Just seems kinda absurd to list it.
My company did away with Holidays since a good portion of our staff works shifts (not in O&G) and work 24/7. Which is BS IMO. But needless to say, I just get PTO and they added in the 8 Holidays a year into our PTO accrual.
I like just having PTO personally, but I can see where having sick leave makes more sense. People generally view PTO as "vacation" no matter what all it entails, so if you have a couple of sick days I can see it helping to push people to take a day off.
Also, I can see where having a sick day would allow your boss to tell you to get the hell out of the office with a fever or something so you don't get others sick.

I think from a simplicity purpose, I'd rather go with Paid Time Off (PTO) and allow the employee to use it as they wish. Is there a negative to this?
The negative is that PTO days - whether accrued or otherwise - are going to get used completely. 3 weeks PTO will get used, but 2 weeks vacation and 1 week sick leave may not get used.
From a company standpoint, that is the potential negative. From an employee standpoint, the PTO is preferable.

I am 10 years in and get 23 pto days for vacation and if we are sick we have kind of unlimited sick days. For instance I was out 3 weeks with shingles and 2 weeks last week and still have my 23 days pto.
But if I don't use it I lose it.

Unlimited errthang but nobody takes advantage of it. I average 15-20 non-holidays off per year and regularly leave at 2-3 to get in a few pitches after work. I wouldn't work somewhere that didn't have a similar PTO policy, flexible hours, remote work options, open floor plan, and beer and ping pong in office
I'm all about a mental health day. Most of us have been there before, and you aren't getting much accomplished when you're not in a good spot mentally

I was told my mother had three days to get better or we would have to make a decision. I left unexpectedly when my dad called, natarually. Missed a day and half.
When I returned my boss told me upper mgmt said my desk was too dirty and never to leave it like that.
I would have taken a shite on my desk early in the morning on the next day (well before the cleaning crew was even close to coming) and left a "For upper management" sticky next to it and stuck the company pen in the turd. Well, that's what I would do if I was loaded with money anyway.
F*** upper management. They usually only exist to be more useless than regular management (to be fair, some managers work their arse off and are great people).

Personally I think it should be a month off standard PTO per year, use it for what you will.
You're out, away from the office. I couldn't care less why. Just my 0.02.

Currently accrue 120 hours/year of PTO and carry over up to 200. I've actually never heard a number on sick days. Pretty much take what you need, and don't abuse it.

I just started a new job and I get 10 vacation days and 2 personal days. However, I don't get those days until I've worked here a full year. I also get 10 sick days and the same one year rule applies, but I'm pretty sure if I get the flu and I'm puking my guts out, they'll give me the day off. My boss is pretty understanding though. He knows I'm getting married next April, and he told me I could take some days off for the wedding and/or honeymoon.

She reminds me of the girl everyone knew in high school who was a huge drama queen and always missed way too many days because she "didn't feel good".

Mental health? frick I would settle for a couple weeks paternity leave so I don't have to exhaust my PTO

We have 10 sick days, 3 personal days, and 3 emergency days. We lose the emergency days when we don't use them. And since we don't have paid maternity leave, I'm trying to sit on as many days as I can for when that comes up.
The only thing I don't like is if you use more than 3 sick days in a year (cumulative, not consecutive) then you have to provide a doctor's note. Working with kids you tend to get everything coming and going and I don't go to the doctor for a simple 24-hour stomach bug or cold.
I also wish they were straight PTO since we worked to earn those days and shouldn't have to worry about getting fired for taking a trip on days we earned over a long weekend.

The problem with Madalyn is that once her lazy butt gets used to having an extra few days off each year, she will need more "time off" to get more rest.
She is almost certainly a terrible coworker and not interested in doing her best to serve and help others.

Me first Madalyn.
You just do you.
It works out best every time.
Sarcasm on [off]

We get 2 weeks of vacation per year, doesn't carry over. Don't get any of that other mularkey.
To the chick in your OP, you've got 14 hours a day (happy hour from 5-7) and the weekends to get your mind right. Get your arse to work.

Teacher in a state that is not right to work..We get 15 sick days a year to use how we like. Any days not used carry over. I have around 130 days available (15 years) I rarely get sick so most days that I use one is for taking my kids to the doctor or golfing in May.
We are also given 3 personal days that I use every year for a December golf trip to Florida. If you don't use your personal days you lose them but you also get paid for them at the end of the year.
7 hours a day, 182 work days a year and we still have teachers in my building that bitch about their jobs! Unreal

My company used to have separate sick and vacation. When I moved up to my current position, I decided to combine them and call it PTO. Most employees preferred it this way
No carry-over of this PTO/vacation time into another year, that's true for both salaried & hourly employees.
If a salaried someone misses a day or more and blames it on being sick, they get to bring a note from a medical professional to excuse the absence. Otherwise it comes out of their PTO pot. The hourly folks don't get paid if they blame sickness for missing time but then they have to bring a doctor's note or else it's an unexcused absence.

At my company you accrue PTO hours every pay period and the amount is dependent on how long you have been with the company. We also have mandatory holidays which fall in line with the same ones that Federal employees receive and receive 6 floating holidays to use as we wish that are use it or lose it.
I am deployed in Afghanistan and work 10 hour days 7 days a week so in lieu of holidays and floating holidays I receive extra PTO accrual every pay period. Right now I am earning almost 10 hours of leave every 2 weeks and when I go home on R&R (2 weeks) I usually don't even have to use any of my PTO by scheduling my dates for departure and arrival from Afghanistan for the middle of the pay period.
I am sitting on a bank of 380 PTO hours right now and it is just going to continue to grow. By the time I am done in Afghanistan I will be able to take off between 3 and 4 months paid.

I get 3 weeks paid vacation (got an extra week after 5 years). Can carry over 3 days to first quarter of following a year (has to be specially approved). Sick time accrues up to some high number, wanna say 6 months. 1 personal holiday (basically mental health day.. and used to be 3 but they took 2 away to give us day after Thanksgiving and Xmas Eve off). 3 days bereavement time for immediate family members death.

Per year
20 paid vacation accrued to 50
12 sick days accrued unlimited
20 paid holidays (2 weeks at Christmas/New Years).
Accrued vacation and sick days are paid upon seperation from company.
If we have to work on a holiday, we get 2 for 1 flexdays that have to be used during the fiscal year.
I am salaried and have to work late and on weekends sometimes to get the job done, but if I leave early or get to work late for an appointment or kids (sick, program, sports game), it doesn't count against me as long as deadlines are met.
