Your company's policy on vacation, PTO, sick leave, bereavement and holiday time?

Is it accrued? Use it or lose it? Is it broken out by category or lumped into one group?

I'm further researching this and I noticed that a new "category" is going viral and I want to be ahead of the curve for my company.

Well, Madalyn Parker, a web developer, did exactly that in an email.

She sent an email to her team letting them know she was taking two days off "to focus on my mental health"—and was shocked by the CEO's response.

quote:

We've all heard that we should take a mental health day from time to time, but how many of us are brave enough to actually take one—and let our coworkers and boss know that mental health issues may be the reason for being out of office?

quote:

She tweeted the email exchange, where it has over 30,000 likes and 8,400 retweets.

quote:

Ben Congleton, the CEO who replied, was so stunned by the outpouring of support that he wrote about it on Medium.
"I wasn’t expecting the exposure, but I am so glad I was able to have such a positive impact on so many people," he wrote on July 6.

"There were so many stories of people wishing they worked at a place where their CEO cared about their health, and so many people congratulating me on doing such a good thing,"

Full Story - attn:

I think from a simplicity purpose, I'd rather go with Paid Time Off (PTO) and allow the employee to use it as they wish. Is there a negative to this?

I'd help her with her mental health anytime she needs it.

Give your millennial employees what they want or face the repercussions on social media.

We have this. Can take it any time for any reason or just cash it in. Think we accrue at 14-22 hours a month depending on longevity.

We are use it or loss but they are kinda dicks when you use it

I was told my mother had three days to get better or we would have to make a decision. I left unexpectedly when my dad called, natarually. Missed a day and half.

When I returned my boss told me upper mgmt said my desk was too dirty and never to leave it like that.

Lucky my mom is doing much better

Unless a close family member died or I'd had some other sort of legitimately traumatic event, I would never take sick days for "mental health." That's what vacation days are for. But if the boss is too big of a bitch to call her out, more power to her.

We lose what we don't use and our boss doesn't believe people get sick. This would put you on a path to being fired.

Are there any draw backs? Other than paid time away not being classified individually?

I give 10 days PTO...use it how you want. It's not my business if you're sick, taking vacation, or banging your cousin. Accrue 2 days per month (so you earn all of it by May).

We have PTO(I get 5 weeks at this point) and i love it that way. We work in a high stress industry with tight deadlines that often ask for last minute overtime etc etc.

I have 80 contractors and 6 fulltimers under me. I prefer they dont tell me what they use their PTO or UTO for. As long ad its not abused. The only time ill give them a harder time than usual is around big time milestones.

Ive seen massive drops in productivity over the years and retention issues with my high performers after long stretches of 50-80 hour weeks.. sometimes ill make people take a day just to rest. Its cheaper in the lo g run.

Of course my view is a long term one.

I bet these people focus all their attention in the wrong areas and cant ever figure out why things are going wrong...

I'm of the opinion that my time is mine and I do not need to give a reason. I put in the request for time off, and if approved, take it. I don't think personal things of this nature need to be shared with everyone in the office. It's not brave, it's just attention seeking.

Mine is accrued, but it's I think 5-6 weeks per year, and I never have to give any reason for using it.

Works for me.

Accrued... vacation times maxes out at three years' worth of accrual, sick leave doesn't ever max out.

We aren't ever questioned about taking a sick day, so it's not unusual to just call in sick for a regular day off. People use them pretty interchangeably as long as it's not an extended stretch.

I'd be a fan of just going to straight PTO without having to break it up.
