re: You Ever Knew Someone Who Simply Died Of Old Age?

About 15 years ago I got a call early in the morning to get to my grandmother bedside at a hospital 45 mins away. She woke screaming in pain as her osteoporotic bones starting collapsing (talking everything including her lumbar spine which is very thick bone usually). She died before I could get there, age 94.

If not, then no one can say there wasn't an underlying cause. Otherwise, why do some people live to be over 100 and others "die of old age" in their 80s and early 90s?
Because there's this thing called genes. Scientists have been doing a big project on it for a few decades.

My paternal grandmother. 102 years old.

My great grandmother died like that. She had a regular checkup at 98 years old doctor told her she could live to be 110. Her husband had died 2 decades earlier and she lived with my grandparents, did all of their house chores and then played cards and drank Budweiser every night. Said her Hail Marys at the right time each day no matter what she was doing at the moment.
She felt ill a month after the checkup and went to the hospital. Died the next day, the day before her 99th birthday. One of the nicest ladies I've ever met

I know what you mean and agree with you. There really is no cause of death that is literally "old age". Either the heart craps out or whatever in the elderly person and that's the cause of death.
I think by "old age" people just mean nothing obvious or apparent like heart attack, organ failure, etc and if the person was elderly they just chalk it up to that.

There is always a reason. Sometimes it isn’t worth trying to figure out why...especially when they are very old.

Your heart doesn't just stop beating one day on its own. Some medical condition causes it to stop. Old age isn't a condition.

My grandfather.
Was riding in the car with my grandmother on the way to the hospital for a checkup.
Took a deep breath, exhaled, and was gone.
They were in front of the police station. Paramedics were on the scene in less than two minutes. Small town.

From then on you'll need the synchronicity.

Maw maw was 87.
She and Dad had lunch every Wednesday.
One Tuesday night she put her card out (they always “fought” over who got to pay) set the alarm, and went to bed. Dad found her in bed the next day when he went to pick her up.
If I live to 87 and go in my sleep, I would consider myself very fortunate.

& you say nothing was wrong? You don't start feeling bad unless something is wrong. Autopsy will reveal cause of death & I'm willing to bet it had something to do with her starting to feel bad.

My grandma died of “old age”. She was over 100 years old. Just lost the desire to eat or drink over the course of 1-2 months. Had hospice on board the last 3 weeks or so. No infection, uti, or anything, so I’m guessing just an electrolyte imbalance from malnutrition that led to an arrhythmia. Never checked a BMP or CBC in the last month, but I would be curious about what her K/Mg levels were just before death. Urine was relatively concentrated, but still urinating, so I doubt kidney failure.

She essentially died physically from the massive organ failure resulting from the lack of supporting skeleton. It was really more like the shock/stress of the pain though that killed her.
Flip a coin. Shock/stress from pain or organ failure. End result was the same, about 2 hours of pain so bad nothing could block it, then death. Wouldn't be surprised to eventually run into a Dr. who tells me he OD her on morphine to end her suffering really. My Aunt who was there said she waaaay spaced out from the morphine but still in pain.

Losing close ones is never easy especially when they die too young, nothing I would ever wish on anyone
