re: Yeti products that aren't a ripoff

Just FYI - I have also bought coolers from, "other sources," here on TD.com's Outdoor Board. This post may be deleted just for referencing it.
But I own two from that outfit and I can confirm they absolutely all do come from the same factory...unless you want American Made. YETI actually has a production facility stateside so if you request it you can literally buy American made from them.

nor was yeti first on the scene.... Icy-Tek and Engel i believe were both here before Yeti, however, it is in fact true that Yeti may have been the first to truly capitalize on the market and captivate the masses, but they were not first in the game

Late to this party of Yeti bashing but I have a Yeti water jug that is awesome. Some of my friends say it looks just like a common gallon jug but when they sample the perfectly cold 36 degree water right out of the fridge, minds change. Best of all, they've kept the advertising at a minimum. The sticker is on the bottom. Tipping for a sip reveals the secret.

So which plant is making these cups and why isn't the plant just selling their baller cups directly?
They are made in China, and sold at places like Walmart and Sams, and others I'm sure.

I have a Yeti 20 oz. tumbler that I use pretty much every day for hot/cold beverages.
Would a cheaper brand do the same thing? Almost certainly, but it's a quality product and at least it's not as overpriced as the ice chests or the infamous Yeti bucket.
this is the accurate answer to me. i bought one before i knew they were a thing at a buc-ees back in 2015 or 2016 i think. i put about 35k miles a year in the work car for travel and go through a lot of coffee cups. so it was a splurge, but it kept coffee hot and other things cold and still does to this day despite a beating.
i'd call it the perfect one because it's the right size for water, a cup of tea, a beer, or coffee without being a huge overbearing cup.
just my opinion.

hell i'd argue Tervis was the biggest ripoff from . Yeti did the same thing, just with metal.

My brother got one of their soft coolers from a raffle at work. It's the only thing I've seen from Yeti that would make me consider paying for one as I haven't seen anything comparable. It's like made out of rubber from a fire hose.

Fishing offshore for 3 days? Running back country rafting expeditions? Yes, then a cheap Coleman probably won't cut it.
I love the examples always used as to what should constitute a REAL use for a Yeti.
Can't I just be primitive camping for a week in the summer with the nearest store being 45 min away?
I need my ice to keep in 90's heat for 5 days minimum. My POS Coleman can't do that. I would be making 2 trips just for ice whilst trying to enjoy my camping trip. Do that a couple times and gas/time=the cost of a nice cooler.

Not very primitive of you.

We have the first gen of those and it sucks because of the opening. That one is much better. My favorite is the little square topped one though.

Primitive means no power or running water son. Didn't say I'm living like a wild man
Or do you like hot beer and nasty food?

I guess it does its job, but I'd rather they made one that would fit 16oz cans too. I'd definitely call it overpriced, because I'd never buy one at that price for myself.

I preordered this last spring, and it arrived in May last year. It can be used for 16 oz cans, comes with a freezable insert for 12 oz cans, and a screw in lid to use with coffee or beer without a can.

Do you carry it around everywhere and call everyone some clever play on "Bro"?

profit margin is not correct
I'd read this article two years ago but you're right. It's only a 33.3% margin on a full-price retail sale for the retailer.
It's still such a huge margin for the price-point that it's easy to see the point still stands.

Not often. I may bring it out to an open-air concert by the lake or to cool necks during a 5K but normally it's in the fridge.

I can get 36 degree water out of the fridge with any jug I put in there.

I have this cooler from Walmart and it works just as well as a Yeti. It was around $75. I'm sure the Yeti version is $350
There Ozark trail coolers are very cheaply made. The straps will stretch, and it'll eventually lose its ability to seal. I had one, but returned it when I couldn't get more than 1 day from a bag of ice.
I then bought an igloo sportsman rotomolded cooler. I think they sell them for $99 at Sam's. It's about as cheap as a high end cooler will cost, and it works as well as a yeti. It'll last several years longer.
