Doesn't the pope believe the old testament is real but also believes that God has become more merciful and less vengeful? You know....the new testament.

I went to catholic school in middle school. Sometimes in religion class the priest would come teach us. Our priest told us he believed in evolution and that we should think of the old testament more as parables than something that actually happened. I was in 8th grade.. 1992-1993 school year. He used to also have a hunting rifle in his back truck and if you catch him going inside after running to the store, you would see him carrying a 6 pack of Budweiser.
