I live close to a bison ranch in Oklahoma.
One time, I was jogging past the corner of the property with my dog, and there were about 5 of them standing there watching us.
One of them let out a snort and it scared the piss out of my dog. Gave me a pretty good adrenalin rush, too.

While you are absolutely correct, Bison Bill, Bison nickel, and the Bison Expressway just don't have that same ring to them.
Apparently when people from the old world came here and first saw the North American bison, they were reminded of the Buffalo that lived in their old countries. For that reason they called the bison "buffalo", and the name just stuck.
