Maybe it was the "Hug a Chinese" anti-Xenophobia campaign?

That's not what the data shows. Also, we're a hellofalot more spread out and distant just to start off. Add in cancelling life and I believe we're going to not see anything at all like this.

Italy is an anomaly. When you look at the numbers from every country it just stands out by far.

Italians revere their older generation and often have multiple generations living in the same household with grandma/grandpa living with their grown children who in turn have children.

maybe Italians are especially vulnerable to CV19 like blacks are to Sickle Cell?

China has been moving toward less socialist economy while Italy has been moving toward socialism.

Good to see some that are taking this seriously.
Some busy bodied old hag in my neighborhood is planning a blood drive in our VERY SMALL neighborhood park in the next few weeks.
I am the most evil, vile person she knows now because I pointed out how bad of an idea it is to cram a bus with a few people that are barely nurses (if that) taking blood from who knows how many people in our little park that measures about 150'x 40'. I even offered the parking lot of my office about 1 mile away.
Nope, I'm a bastard for suggesting anything other than her idea of bringing many people who wouldn't otherwise be in our park. She's now going to park the bus in her driveway and let people park in the streets.

It's the oldest population in Europe. Think I read earlier that the average age in Italy is like 48 years old

Japan has an older population I believe, and also live on top of each other, but not even the same stratosphere of problems. I think Italy fricked up by not taking this seriously until it was too late.

Now WTF is wrong with NYC?!? Cases doubled overnight.

If it doubles again tomorrow, and doubles again after that, BOOM we're now Italy.

NYC mayor made a statement this morning. They ramped up testing big time so expected positive cases to jump as well

None of this is unique to Italy. I agree with OP; it’s very strange.

The countries with high population density older population big families that live together seem to be getting hit harder.

Italy is worse off because it has a shite ton of Chinese workers. And they didn't take it as seriously. But also social distancing yourself in Italy still means 300+ people on the same block.
