A lot of these same issues affect LA also, but at least LA as oil and a destination city. Obviously, the destination city is in steep decline.

I didn't know it was possible to fall behind Louisiana.

If you take out Jackson, Mississippi is actually doing pretty well.

For forever MS was indeed behind La in pretty much everything.
Seems the last five years the argument could be made that MS has pulled ahead. I know their education system has somehow became a lot better that La.
But yeah Jackson being so horrible really does pull the state down big time

In 20-30 years, Baton Rouge will be Jackson.

At least we have LSU and the petrochemical industry to keep us propped up

I spend some time there and I agree. Seems like a decent place outside of Detroit of the South.

ETA:

Jackson may just completely collapse. It's bad.

I love articles like this. Maybe it will keep some people from thinking of moving here. As long as you are not in Jackson, it's a pretty dang good living. Cost of living is super cheap, I love it.

MS is fine down here on the coast. Why didn’t we get the TopGolf?

For anyone reading this thread, the Mississippi Gulf Coast is absolutely horrible. It's expensive, the people suck, there are no jobs, everyone is poor, and crime is high. Do not move here. There is no reason to.

I’m truly amazed at the number of people I know that have bought or built second homes in the Bay St Louis area in the last 3 or 4 years. Are y’all putting crack in the water or something over there?

NAFTA and GATT destroyed Mississippi.

There used to be a ton of textile mills making cotton products and factories making cheap consumer goods. It was honest work that paid reasonably well, especially when you factor in a low cost of living.

When all of that went overseas, duty-free, Miss had little to fall back on. Those with brains or looks left for greener pastures. Those with neither stayed behind and contributed to the population dillution.

I'm supposed to believe an article from the WSJ probably written by someone who has never been to MS and the only reason they wrote the article is to stick it to Tater Tot who beat their beloved Brandon Presley? Not a chance.

There was a NYT article a few years back about Ole Miss and Oxford that was basically "wow, this place wasn't as terrible and racist as I thought it would be"
