I was wondering why they suck now.

Just like when Kraft ruined string cheese after they bought Polly-O.

Just watched one TT that explained how a corporation ruined a hot sauce after it bought the company. Reduced the vinegar, started adding more water and acetic acid. Of course the taste changed for the worse.

Why would you not want a finance guy in charge?

In charge of the financials of the merger? Excellent choice for a finance guy

In charge of the operational decisions and structuring of a completely new business? The last guy you want is a finance guy

The product makes the money. Finance guys rarely understand the product.

I haven't had a Twinkie in probably 20 years and the last time I had one it was so awful I said id never eat one again.

70% of Twinkie customers were eating more than one a day. That is great if you maintain consistency and quality in the product. If you don’t like Smucker did, you’re screwed.

Smuckers introduced me to Community Coffee.

I drank Dunkin Donuts coffee for decades. Not from the shop, the stuff you buy at Krogers. Price kept going up and up.

Being a member of this site, I tried Community breakfast blend.

I have never gone back, just wish they sold the 100+ cup size container.

Mergers that essentially leave the merged company intact (at least for an extended integration period) work the best.

Can speak to this firsthand.

One of my previous employers was acquired by a national company and simply became a new region. Worked fine.

Another company bought everything and screwed up whatever it touched.

You guys are missing a very important point in all of your analysis of the merger blunders. The Ding Dongs don’t taste nearly as good as before. That’s all I care about. Never did care for the Twinkie. But man, I used to destroy those Ding Dongs before they messed up the recipe. Now, they don’t even tempt me in the least. Too many other good chocolate alternatives. Oh well, just another one of my childhood favorites gone by the wayside. Maybe Elon can restore them to their prior glory. I’m sure he has nothing better to do.

Because they tried to run the baking company like it was a jam/preserves company. That’s why they don’t taste as good.

also not included in this article is that Hostess products are fricking horrible for you. the "slight" trend of eating healthier could be having an impact as well.

I’m an engineer and have owned several businesses. I’ve had a ton of experience with “financial people” from tax attorneys to accountants and investment bankers and private equity investors. I have a lot of respect for most of them.

And the Private Equity guys have had an amazingly positive impact on American businesses. We have the best business community in the world, by far, and that is largely due to the influence and discipline generated by P.E.
