Would you take a lie detector test

If you had a loved one who was missing or deceased in order to try and exclude you as a suspect?
Innocent or guilty, I would personally avoid this at all costs. Science is not settled. Too much to lose, IMO.

I got nothing to hide.

Do you understand the question?

Probably some innocent guy on death row would advise against it.

Absolutely not. I'd fail even if I were 100% innocent due to my nervous nature.

Would you take a breathalyzer test if it was optional ?

I might be wrong, but I seem to remember that a prereq for accuracy from a polygraph is that the subject isn’t emotional, as in distraught or angry. How can I guarantee that I’m not upset about a missing loved one?

“Remember, Jerry, it’s not a lie if you believe it”

How would you know if I told you the truth?

Your goal would be to convince the police if you are taking the lie detector test. In which case I don't know if you can do that successfully.
There are objective things that you can demonstrate like where you were. If you want to demonstrate innocence give that information to your lawyer.
I voluntarily gave a DNA sample once when a person with a similar name was allegedly in the presence of a person who was murdered later that night. In retrospect I regret the amount of overcompliance FWIW the murderer in that case turned out to be a policeman who was romantically involved with the victim. The process gave me more sympathy to the innocent people around the person who died. It makes you feel guilty just going through the interview with police and submitting to their requests

It depends on what the question was and if I would be lying or telling the truth to answer it.
Seriously, I would take it in a heartbeat. Won't bother me.

Lie detectors are just this side of voodoo. The science itself is shaky at best, but on top of that, the results are heavily influenced by the individual performing the test. Innocent or guilty, it’s not worth doing, not dissimilar to Standard Field Sobriety.

Do you honestly trust the cops that are trying to secure evidence to even tell you the truth on if you passed or not? You're usually not asked to even take one unless you are the suspect in the crime.

They aren't admissible in court for a reason.
ETA: And the machine doesn't "detect lies", the person running it is supposed to. You're wholly at the mercy of that person's training and perceived expertise, or lack thereof.

No, and if I “needed” to get excluded as a suspect I would lawyer up immediately and not say a word.
