I get it, but the “south” is a really big place and there are plenty of parts of it that don’t have this and still have houses with central AC and Nest thermostats.

My neighbors aren’t so bad that I’d give up my Nest to get rid of them.

major reason for the growth of the South is due to the prevalence of central AC. Most countries in the world don’t have this, even first world countries.

So would you give up the prevalence of central AC if it meant the population returned to what it was in the 80s and 90s?

Fun fact, New Orleans had almost double the population in 1960 than today, well before the mass expansion of A/C.

That doesn’t take into growth of the metro areas

Window units are relatively cheap.

Less efficient AC wouldn't depopulate the South.

I would lead the masses out of the promised land myself without AC. Why the frick would anyone live in the south without AC? I don't even know how folks had babies in the south except for those born nine months from January and early February....outside of that 8 week window its too hot to frick in the south without AC.

All the OT ballers would have to move, non-trashy neighborhoods don't allow such a thing.

I asked my 90 year old grandfather years ago how they managed to sleep on those hot July and August southern nights before air conditioning.

He simply said, “We didn’t. It was awful”

It was. I can remember living in houses and apartments with no AC and going to school without any. Almost no one had a car with AC in it until I was nearly an adult. The only time you got any sleep at all was the rare occasion when it rained AFTER it got dark. It rained almost every evening just before dark which made the atmosphere more like a sauna than an oven....but occasionally it would rain after dark and the temps would drop into the mid 70s and you would be hunting a quilt LOL. Most nights you could drift off just before sunrise. We thought it was normal. When Marta buses were airconditioned in the early 1970s we would ride them all day and into the evening LOL....and we weren't alone.

My parents did it. Bathe at night, open the windows and turn on the attic fan, then sleep on top of the covers. You get used to it I suppose.

Attic fan was fantastic for about 90 minutes and then the inside of the house felt like you were outdoors in a sizeable downpour. Seriously, the bed sheets would be wringing wet and the walls would be dripping. It was actually more uncomfortable most nights with the attic fan on because it was like trying to sleep in a driving rain storm......

central AC

If there were a magic button that I could push that would eliminate all of the blacks in the south and all I had to do was put window units in my house, I would push that button 100/100 times.
