You can build one much cheaper than buying a foosball or air hockey table. More fun to play too IMO

We have had a ping pong table and a Foosball table in the office break area.
Foosball is definitely better of the two. 4 can play and make it more social. Both games are hard to play with inexperienced others, but at least with Foosball you can mix teams. 4 player ping pong sucks.

The advantage of foosball is you can have people team up and control individual rods while you can't have more than two people play on a traditional air hockey table at a time.

Air hockey is a blast, provided the table offers good airflow.

foosball is way better but you have to be skilled or you will get creamed by anyone with just a slight amount of experience.
air hockey I would imagine is much simpler.
Keep an eye on craigslist. I just picked a nice tornado foosball table for my aunt for like 275. Dont buy any other table besides a tornado.

I just googled it. Chexx Bubble Hockey. You can get USA vs Canada or USSR for $2500. You can also get customized NHL matchups for $3000.
Penguins vs. Nordiques would be cool.

Fwiw, my three kids play on their foosball table at least weekly. Their air hockey table is now being used as a table in the greenhouse. If we had the space, I'd opt for a pool table. But those require a minimum of like 12'x16' of open area.

Got a air hockey table set up for the grandson. Gave it to him last Christmas. He plays it a lot. 
Once he get bigger, a foosball will be in order.
