re: Would you ever consider declaring bankruptcy if your hospital bill was high enough?

What are the things one does to destroy a pancreas? Serious question. My SIL just got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. That's some bad shite.

What kind of part B bill runs over $600,000? Part A is where you typically see astronomically high bills and Medicare pays their portion after you meet the deductible.

In his case, near constant drug and alcohol use. Never gave his body a chance to recover.

I want to see more specifics. Reddit is notorious for people inventing elaborate stories for karma. Even if you have a lower plan, your out of pocket max would be no where near that.
A writer for Vox did an in-depth investigation into ER bills and included copies of ER bills that people sent her in her column. It's a pretty eye-opening column.
Vox
I didn't see a link, but I thought at one time her database of bills was available to see.

Am I just sheltered? Even under out of network family plans the absolute most I would pay is 24k. What the hell are they getting for their insurance?
All they have to say is it’s not covered and it doesn’t apply to your deductible

I think in the Reddit story, there was in issue with pre-authorization that led to some services not being covered.

This was 17 years ago, we live and we learn. We were young and panicked, it all worked out.

Maybe so I don't have any first hand knowledge. But logically why would a hospital accept $120/year payment on thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars? I just don't know why they would bother with such a small amount unless legally obligated and maybe they are in some states.
Because some money > no money.

I understand, not meant as an insult, I probably wouldn't know anything about this if the old lady hadn't been in the business, you see a big bill, you want to do the right thing but the amount is crippling, glad it all worked out

If they were demanding it up front, then I would consider it, but it would probably be smarter to let it go to collections and work out a payment plan with the creditor if the hospital wouldn't let you setup a payment schedule.

90% of people diagnosed with this disease die within the year. Prayers for your family.
We lost my MIL to this and work with a local charity to raise money for research here at UAB. Terrible, terrible disease.

Who even thinks of filing bankruptcy over 3-4k? I think you are missing the point of this thread

No just don’t pay it and seven years it’ll be gone

Usually easier to just negotiate a discounted payment. Walk into the business office with a prepared Bankruptcy filing. Along with all your financial information. Tell them you'll write a check for $5000 in exchange for a total release. Or, you'll file BK and they get nothing.
They'll take the $5000.
Something like this. Ignore the bill, negotiate for 5% and they will take it.

My dad owed like 3-4K from a hospital stay (after insurance). Hospital has him paying $89 a month until it’s paid off.
OP, was making reference to over $130K worth of medical bills, which is at a whole different level than 3-4 grand. No one in their right mind is declaring a BK over 3-4 grand worth of medical bills.

Damn. Every day I wonder why doesn’t the majority (those without existing expensive chronic issues) doesn’t use HDCP/HSA if they all have it available.
Self insuring as much as possible seems critical if they can easily say they won’t cover a critical procedure.
