Maybe not NASA, but surely someone in the private sector would notice it.

I feel like the ability to spot a “mass extinction causing” asteroid is not exclusive to NASA. Like can’t a regular space nerd with the right equipment do this?

Can a regular space nerd calculate trajectory on the fly? Astrodynamics equations are very difficult to solve. Takes a lot of data and computing power to get an answer.

Even if an amateur astronomer discovered it, seems like NASA would calculate the trajectory first. Once the situation is known, do they have a contingency plan in place to begin silencing as many people as possible to keep the information secret?

Edit: "Silencing" need not be any form of violence. But perhaps they would try to discredit other researchers out there who also discover the trajectory will result in an impact on Earth.

"Hey, pay no heed to those researchers. Our data clearly show that this won't hit Earth....What's that? No, you can't see our data."

That’s not how it works. You can’t hide mass extinction sized object in space. Every amateur and profession astronomer would spot it, and they don’t work for NASA. NASA actually relies on the civilian sector to monitor near earth objects in the solar system.

The government leaks like a submarine with screen doors, word would get out.

I think Yellowstone is more likely to happen in our lifetime and I think that would be easier to keep quite until it explodes.

Watch Deep Impact, not the porn. That was the most realistic move made on the subject.

For a more entertaining move try Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.

But like others said no way they can keep it quiet.

Good god I hope not

I lived through the TP shortage... I cannot even imagine how our last months/days would go in this scenario

Don't worry about it. Our alien overlords would call in their space fleet on the far side of Mars to nudge it off course.

And then it passes by us instead of hitting. Would be funny to see how all that would play out.

Like in the Outlaw Josey Wales, where the old Indian chief decides his time has come to die. He dresses up in his warbonnet, sings his death song and lies down on his little platform he built. Come next morning he hasn't died so he gets up and carries on as usual.

There was an episode of Sliders that covered all of this. People would be getting coked up and playing Russian roulette, kinky sex and lots of purging.

Or would they take us to their planet(s) in a great migration?

After watching the way this country has trended in the last few decades, there is zero chance any type of intelligent life form would risk ruining their home by doing this.

Some backyard stargazer would discover it before NASA.

No way in hell. Just like that solar observatory that was closed for a few days due to a janitor having kiddie porn.

Why the hell would the FBI and SS be involved?

Something was detected or seen. Took a few days to "sanitize" the facility.

Just wait till we get hit with gamma rays.

The question is how many asteroids will hit earf over a given period of time.

Probably not. But I bet all the “special people’” would be headed to special bunkers.
