Would NASA ever admit to a mass extinction-causing asteroid being on its way?

Let's ignore any far-fetched Bruce Willis scenarios and just hypothesize that the asteroid is too big to be split or pushed off course by any known nuke:
Would NASA bring themselves to admit to it if they had the data?
Basically, any such announcement would bring about the end of civilization, wouldn't it? Mass panic. People quitting their jobs en masse to spend time with their family. People indulging in decadent, carefree behavior to enjoy their last few days/weeks/months on Earth.

Hey I watched that new Gerard Butler movie and yes they did. They even had the news anchors covering it 12 hours before impact and people stopping at red lights in their vehicles

And then it passes by us instead of hitting. Would be funny to see how all that would play out.

People would just call it a hoax and take veterinary medicine.

no way word wouldn't get out.
how many people within NASA would know? 10?, 20, 50?
each one tells one. world wide news in a week.

Depends on if there’s anything they could do about it.

Depends on if the higher-ups get a hold of the data early and can put a stop to the spread of any information beyond a few dozen people. A few dozen people are easy to control. But you're right, if it were 100, the information would be leaked.

it only takes one.

Is there nothing that can't be turned into a COVID thread?
Posted on 9/21/21 at 8:31 am to UndercoverBryologist
apparently not even an extinction level event thread.

Maybe not NASA, but surely someone in the private sector would notice it.

There's a lot of amateur astronomers. It would depend on how fast the thing is going but if NASA doesn't leak I would guess the information would get out at least a few weeks before impact.

You know there would be some that would be posting in it right up to impact.

OP: "Wow, what a beautiful spiral from Aaron Rodgers on that TD pass."
First Commenter: "Yeah, must have been COVID."
OP: "What does that even mean?"

Pretty sure there’s an entire network of sky watchers globally, some state-run, some independent, so I think it’d be impossible to keep quiet.

I feel like the ability to spot a “mass extinction causing” asteroid is not exclusive to NASA. Like can’t a regular space nerd with the right equipment do this?

quote:so stupid. Not sure what’s worse the comment trying to be witty, or throwing politics into a fun thread finally not about covid. Congrats your dumb frick
veterinary medicine.

This is definitely a ff to stop the transition back to Trump after Arizona decertifies on Friday.
