My wifes sister shut out family members due to covid/political reasons. My wife hurts over this.

I do this planning for a living. A lot of time parents will just name the oldest as beneficiary on financial accounts since they are confident they will just distribute the money to everyone equally. It's almost always a terrible idea and OPs Uncle is definitely a POS

Either through sex or money, or both, you’ll find someone’s weakness

In about every family there will be a money “situation”.

A death like that brings out the true colors in people. It's super sad to see and is disgusting to say the least.
My dad pasted away and didn't have much and left me a Harley and some tools. He had died of lung cancer and lived on a fixed income etc. I ended up giving him my first starter home I bought when I bought my ex wife and our first real nice home.
Anyway he left my sister's like 10k and his truck. Well they threw a fit bc the bike was worth more than they had gotten. I was pissed and shocked at the same time. I went and traded the bike in for 3 4 wheeler 2 new ones and a used one and gave them to the grand kids that were there's. I just lost my dad and you care about material shite. frick you
I still bring that shite up to this day, to make them feel like a POS

On a positive note, my brother and I have become even closer since mom passed. I let him have her car outright and everything else is in a trust that we split. No problems between us at all.

This is more disappointing than bad. Years ago, My uncle and my dad researched on what land my great great granddad homesteaded in Hicks, La. :They eventually found it. My uncle was in the oil business and pretty successful. He purchased the land, I think 100 acres and lived in a brick house on it. Nothing fancy. Well, when he went to an assisted living facility I asked him if I could have the first rights in buying it. I'd match any offer. (You know, like keep it in the family, just like he wanted when he bought it.) He sold it 2 years later without me knowing about it. One of his sisters (who probably told him to ignore me) tried to soften me up and said, "you really didn't want that land did you?" I said, " Yes, I absolutely did." frick.

That is your Maw Maw's fault for not having a will that stated EXACTLY what to do with the money. "Trusting" someone is not enough.
Why didn't your siblings push her to do a will? If she fully trusted your uncle, maybe she wanted him to have it all anyway?

One thing I've noticed about a lot of well off people is they're never satisfied with any amount of money and they'll stab whoever in the back to get more of it. Not all rich people, but it isn't uncommon from my observation.

Good people can make dishonest decisions at times. And bad people can do kind and nice things from time to time. Sounds like the OP's uncle falls into the first category.

My mom and I were extremely close up until she tried to steal my father's inheritance from my brother and me.
Never mind, that her and my father had been divorced for 35 years and that she had remarried a year after they divorced.

Combine that with her treating my children like absolute shite and I haven't spoken to her in 2 years.

It’s completely feasible that this guy helped confused parents fill out paperwork, and they were not aware of the implications.

This uncle decided he’d rather have cash than family. Karma will equalize this when he has no one to reach out to in a time of need.

You assume it was public knowledge before the death that there was no will. “Uncle” could have convinced them that they didn’t need one. I imagine most kids don’t know for sure if their parents have a will.

I have a niece who is a career drug addict, thief, con artists, manipulator.

40 years old and probably hasn't worked two years in her life

Her main target for the past 25 years has been her mother (my sister), she's probably stolen 35-40K from her by forging checks, cash from her purse or some type credit card fraud.

Recently she was arrested and hired a lawyer by stealing my sister's credit card numbers (stupid lawyer for taking the payment) $7,500.00.

Then she just comes to Thanksgiving like "HEY YA'LL"

On a recent trip back home for a family funeral I heard what I thought was just a family rumor that my favorite uncle growing up didn't pay for my grandpas funeral when he passed away in 2005. My uncle was the beneficiary due to the fact that he rarely worked so he lived with my grandpa most of his life. I asked the funeral director if I was true and he confirmed that it was. I told him to email me the bill and I'd pay it. A few days later I received an email saying one of my other uncles had started making payments on it at some point and it was paid in full in 2016. I know for a fact my dad would've paid it had he been alive but he was killed in a mining accident in 1983.
