I think that's a poor comparison because pretty much the entire corridor from the bridge to the 10-12 split is bad (which is why there is a project underway to change and expand lanes through it).

With that said I give the worst stretch to Baton Rouge because it's bad in at least one direction at almost any given time of day on any given day and there's no real route around it (unless you're going to the old bridge then coming down Airline, which can take just as much time if not more) and the Mobile tunnel has a couple of bypasses (I use the Africatown bridge -> 98 to just avoid all of it, even though the traffic often clears up after the tunnel) with another proposed (can't remember if it has been approved or not).

Neither is close to how bad it is in Los Angeles. I-10 West, from I-110 to Exit 19C and I-10 east at I-5/ I-10 exit 135C to Santa Monica are both on the list of top 25 most congested interstates in America and it can go 24 hours. I have driven there a lot in the past couple of years and it is far worse than anything in the South.

The difference between people in traffic in the south vs out west is that people out west are looking to get to their destination ASAP. In the south, people are generally slow and have no sense of urgency. So it’s just stagnant or very slow moving. I’ve been in traffic out west. It’s congested but at least you’re constantly moving slow as opposed to here where you just make random stops for five minutes, inch forward a few car lengths, stop for five minutes, etc.

Los Angeles is just congestion. BR is exploding 18 wheelers and people unable to drive in a straight line.

They are building a new I-10 bridge from downtown Mobile to the East side of the bay. It will be tolled, but I think out of state tags will be tolled at a higher rate than locals.

From what I read, it's difficult if not impossible for the Feds to allow a state to toll an interstate. And talk about adding to the traffic problem--of course locals would get toll tags but who the hell expects folks driving through Alabama to have them? That means lines of people STOPPING along the interstate to pay.

The other bridge and tunnel will still be open.

Right where I-10 makes an almost 90* turn for no ducking reason. Same with on the bonnet carre right when you’re coming up on Pontchartrain eastbound. Put a unexpected curve in I-10 and watch the traffic stack up every day.

Have you been on a toll road in Texas in the past 10 years? None of them require you to stop whether you have a tag or not. This would presumably have that same technology assuming Alabama is at least somewhat competent.
