The new bridge gets a lot of deserved hate... but that tunnel is jacked up 18 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I'm going to say the bridge is worse... but only because there are a couple of nearby alternates for the tunnel.

Tunnel.

It’s amazing that some engineer actually made the decision to construct it

It’s pretty bad in Kenner near the airport.

False

Its really only bad summer weekends

Most of the time I roll through with minimal slow down

I cant remember the last time I went through BR without bridge issues

Also the tunnel can be avoided with the loop

If you have to avoid the tunnel, wouldn’t that make it a worse section of I10?

They are building a new I-10 bridge from downtown Mobile to the East side of the bay. It will be tolled, but I think out of state tags will be tolled at a higher rate than locals.

You can't really avoid the bridge, but there's plenty of days I'll take the old bridge to avoid traffic.

Lol. You can’t avoid the bridge? But sometimes you take old bridge? Isn’t that avoiding the bridge?

And what is Alabama doing? Replacing the goddamn tunnel with a better option.

Your move, Louisiana.

There's no good way to avoid the new bridge.

The bridge by far. I’ve only ever been slow through the tunnel but I’m almost always stopped at the bridge.

Easily the BR bridge. It backs up like a parking lot every afternoon.

The tunnel is really only bad on weekends in the summer.

Plus Mobile has actually taken the steps to build a world class bridge and improve the area. Baton Rouge is 20 years away from finishing a new bridge.

Well back in the 1970’s there weren’t that many feasible options for a bridge that they didn’t want to impact shipping. So I can see why they opted for a tunnel.

A tunnel doesn’t have a vertical clearance issue and there are national security concerns that a bridge has. It is the reason why the Chesapeake Bridge has tunnels. It is to maintain the shipping lanes for the US naval fleet.

A bridge can can also hinder larger vessels from navigating further up river. Think about it most of the cruise ships in New Orleans only go as high as the Crescent City Connection on the Mississippi because of the height.

I am not saying all new Mississippi River bridges should be tunnels as that is not going to happen because it would be too unfeasible and a tunnel would need to be deeper than anything Mobile has and could flood the city.
