The new bridge gets a lot of deserved hate... but that tunnel is jacked up 18 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The bridge isn't the entire problem, is that narrow stretch right on the EBR side (east bound) that backs traffic up over and beyond the bridge out towards LA415.

It's a shame, because that section is a lot easier to fix than a bridge or a tunnel. Traffic would respond positively by simply adding a lane (making I-10 8-10 lanes wide between I-110 and I-12).

I would say that the tunnel is a bigger frick up because it's impossible to widen.

It’s pretty bad in Kenner near the airport.
=======================
Right past the Williams exit heading into NOLA is the absolute worst. 3 on-ramps in a 1/4 mile leads to massive frickery, and no matter what time of day, it's always congested.

There'a a reason why it's been particularly bad over the last few years.

I-10 through western New Orleans, Metairie and Kenner was being widened and improved as part of a multi-phase project. First, the Power Blvd. ramps were put in place, then the I-10/610 split was redone, then all kinds of other projects were completed -- widening along the interstates and overpasses, the reconfigured Causeway Interchange, etc. .

And then, all out by itself, the Williams interchange was redone. Its main effect on mainline I-10 traffic was the left entrance on to I-10 from southbound Williams. Currently it ends as a merge lane, but in the long term, this was supposed to be into a new lane heading east.

But when the next phase of work-- widening between the Vets overpass and Williams-- was examined, it was found that the Vets overpass can't just be widened, it will need to be completely replaced (like what it happening at the Highland overpass in BR) due to new standards and clearance issues.

Since they found that out, LADOTD hasn't done jack shite with finishing the I-10 widening project, instead focusing on the new flyover that will be built at Loyola to the new airport terminal.

Everyone acts like a COMPLETE retard in the tunnel. It’s like everyone is playing the “alright everyone, hold your breath game.” Everyone slows down to 30 mph for nothing. It’s AIDS.

This "project" started over a generation ago, and has stopped and started as you said.

As far as the Veterans interchange... I completely understand that it's complicated. I've often thought it would be cheaper for the state to cover that canal, then to try to build an overpass to go over both the canal and Veterans. I've also wondered if elevating Veterans and putting the interstate on ground level would help, because of the "curve" on the interstate there.

It's just unfortunate that DOTD can't be bothered with dealing with "complex" situations. They would much rather projects where they just add a lane to flat earth (i.e. the expansion east of Lafayette).

Question: Why is that tunnel so hated. I only have to go through it once or twice a year but it seems okay.

Friday at 10 am (eastbound) and Sat at 11 am (westbound) and both times had multi-mile backups.

The bridge by far. The tunnel has accessible, alternative routes. Plus, after the summer season, the traffic becomes manageable, except during rush hours, wrecks, and other such occasions.

The bridge has no off season. It's always bad, and when special events, e.g. wrecks, happen, it become absolutely intolerable.

And the work around from the bridge leads a driver right back to it or into a maze of opportunities that will keep you trapped forever.
